their idea of a free OS, is I think only for the beta. If I'm wrong, I'm ok with that.

The full release of Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade to anyone running Windows 7 or newer.

I am interested in installing Windows 10. I am interested to know how big the updates are through windows updates? For example from version 1041 to 1049. Thanks

Pointless question when looking at a Bet (test)a product as some iterations may well have debug code, or stuff that gets totally changed, or have bugs that only "real" users find - which of course is the purpose of Beta testing.

I think it is valid question hence the reason I asked. Let me try asking another way. Are the updates from version to version a full image download or are they smaller? Rob I am sorry you thought my question was pointless

The updates take from 3-4 hours of time. About half of that is download and the other half system install time. Now if you have really high speed Internet the download should take less time. My understanding is that these later updates have included the language packs for all languages and that is what is taking so long. There is supposed to be an .iso available for the latest version. I have not seen it as my Win10 computer upgraded on its own. You would only use the latest version if you are going to try it out, you would not use and earlier version and then upgrade it....the latest version is released in both an upgrade, and a full install.

That's OK Speedy - The reason I said its a pointless question is that its a Beta-test product and so the manner of update is probably far from representative of that for the final product. I certainly sounds as if MS are delivering a complete, fresh build each time rather than just a few patches, I expect they are doing this to make sure they know exactly what the user has in terms of kernel and support files when the bug reports are sent back.

This was widely reported in the Tech pages of the newsfeeds. Microsoft is borrowing a page from Apple and naming their OS, just Windows, as you saw in the video. There won't ever be Update Tuesday anymore, just regular updates whenever needed. The updates may have common naming conventions like Apple does such as OS X, Mountain Lion or whatever. So Windows 10 is just the current name for the beta releases, once RTM'd, it will just be known as Windows across all platforms.

Cheers, Keith

don't know...but had a problem with provider about making more than 200GB/month...for only 3x Win10, 3x WinVista, 2x Win7, 3x WinXP...all of them on BOINC with WCG & SETi@home...

The machine I updated from 10.0.10041 to 10.0.10049 at work I started the download then left for lunch. When I got back, about an hour later, the download & installation was finished. The internet connection in the lab is limited to going though a 100Mb connection.

After the update was done it felt like an update install. Given I had may things reset, but SP installs in older OSs have done similar things as well. That might also have to do with using a local account instead of a MS account.

The .iso for 10.0.10074 is the smallest thus far. Despite having added more things to the OS. Probably due to removing of debug files & such.

Interesting information to know thanks. I guess it partly depends on the projects you are running at WCG as some of them have a large input and output files. Hope you don't run into The Internet data issues. From what Hal has said it sounds like the updates/.ISO files are getting smaller

Thanks for your information Hal. Are you using windows 10 as a daily driver at work or is this on a test machine?

Test machine only. It still has to much Windows 8ness for me to consider using for my daily machine. However, with enough tweaks & bops to the head it might get there.

Windows 10 update only for Genuine Windows owners, illegal versions require update fees.

With Windows 10, we have extended an offer to our Genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Once a customer upgrades, they will continue to receive ongoing Windows innovation and security updates for free, for the supported lifetime of that device.

These customers purchased their Genuine Windows license from our valued OEM partners, which ensures Windows is properly installed, licensed, and not tampered with. Windows 10 offers our customers an even more secure and modern experience. Bringing all of our customers to Windows 10 improves the ecosystem for developers which makes Windows better for all of our customers. We are working hard to make the in-place upgrade experience from Windows 7 or Windows 8, to Windows 10, seamless for the customer. Throughout the Windows world, I am humbled by the excitement being associated with this opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10.

When we can’t verify that Windows is properly installed, licensed, and not tampered with, we create a desktop watermark to notify the user. If you ever encounter this watermark on a new machine, I encourage you to return the device immediately to the retailer from whom you purchased it and request a Genuine Windows device. Non-Genuine Windows has a high risk of malware, fraud, public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions. Non-Genuine Windows is not supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner.

Microsoft and our OEM partners know that many consumers are unwitting victims of piracy, and with Windows 10, we would like all of our customers to move forward with us together. While our free offer to upgrade to Windows 10 will not apply to Non-Genuine Windows devices, and as we’ve always done, we will continue to offer Windows 10 to customers running devices in a Non-Genuine state. In addition, in partnership with some of our valued OEM partners, we are planning very attractive Windows 10 upgrade offers for their customers running one of their older devices in a Non-Genuine state. Please stay tuned to learn more from our partners on the specifics of their offers.

I read that build 10122 has been released but not ISO format as yet. I am interested to know how big the update is. I had a look on the doesn't appear to be a beta driver for the 970 on the Nvidia website do you just use the Windows 8.1 driver? 10122 may not be available in the "slow" update ring yet

I am guessing that it took about 4-5 hours to both download and install. It is hard to tell as I only see that it downloaded and started the install when I find the computer waiting for my password to continue the install. I then put my PW in and let the install continue and went to bed. Found everything running in the morning including both BOINC and BOINC Tasks displayed right on the desktop.

Thanks for responses. Bill that is interesting you say you think it takes 4 – 5 hours to complete the process. Are you using this machine before everyday tasks or is it solely system? What are correct in saying you have a high Internet connection speed? Where I am my download speed on a good day as between 7 and 800 kB.

My download is maxed at 15M....but I have noticed that over time when downloading something like this it slows down, sometimes coming to a stop. I only use this particular computer for SETI and testing of WIN 10 at present. I has full Office capabilities but I generally use Office on another computer.
The download takes about 2 hours, as best as I can till.
