Message 59290 - Posted: 2 Jan 2005, 12:45:32 UTC

I had a P4 1.7Ghz machine and called the machine P41700 for that reason. I updated it to a P4 3.4ghz machine and renamed it P43400. I checked my computers and noted I had stacks of the same names and merged them all excepting those that SHOULD be different (I have 4) and P41700 and P43400 which cant be merged using the MERGE option as they dont show up as "similar". I still want, however, to merge the old one into P43400 but assume it takes someone at Boinc to do that.

If possible, can you add anything in P41700 to P43400 please?

As to keeping computers "hidden", I decided to check the IP address of my computers, all of which have dynamic IPs assigned by the ISP but which I force manual IPs on in my LAN seeing XP is notoriously slow at assigning numbers auto. When I checked out the IP numbers on my clients, I see they show my LAN addresses. Not really happy with that and decided it is one more reason NOT to show your computers to the world via Boinc.

If you look at someone else's computers you'll notice that IP and assigned name aren't shown.

Hans is correct Greg.
Only you can see your IP address and computer name, and only if you are logged in to your account.

The upgraded system is looked on as a completely different, and can therefore not be merged. But, all "done" wu is being purged from database 7 days later, so then no more "results" is showing up listed under the host you've stopped using, you can delete it.

Richard and Hans are correct,

There are many IF/THEN statements in the web display part of the BOINC code that say if $private ....then display $IP_ADDRESS... and so forth.

Easiest way to prove this is to view one of your own pending results.
If you dig in to the result you will see 3 (or 4 or more) results for that WU.

Click on the link for your own host (listed by host #) and you will see your IP address.
Click on any of the links for the other hosts and you will see only the "non-private" host display information. (eg: no IP address)

I looked for a way to delete it as I assume one is there. I couldnt find it though. What annoys me is there is unclaimed pending credit on that old one. Sigh.... such is life!

That is simply not possible, because they are totally different CPUs.

Wrong, sorry. If I had not have renamed my machine when I updated to the faster CPU, the credit I had on the old account would have been able to be merged to the new one. What you are saying is that every time a person upgrades their machine, they lose all past credit and THAT is not possible or people would drop like flies!

I changed the cpu and motherboard in This host and kept the same computer id. If you look through the results, you can see where the processing time drops on December 24th. So, it is possible.

The machine-name shouldn't have anything to say, if BOINC detects cpu-old != cpu-new you'll get a new host-id, and it shouldn't be possible to merge 2 wastly different cpu's... Of course, it's possible this code is still accepting it since both is Intel & P4-cpus...

You will not lose any credit, the old host will still be listed under your account if you don't delete it, and even if you delete it you'll still keep your credit, but summing the different hosts will show lower credit than your total. Since you're hiding your computers the only one knowing this is yourself so it's not a problem.

That's what Ingleside was replying to you here. The credits won't get lost, but as soon as you change the CPU of your computer, BOINC thinks of it as a new computer, just from the same person that's using the account to crunch with.

Wait 7 days, then check your account and find the Delete Host option for the old (non-mergable) one available.

(I'm slow at typing, it seems ;))

He'll need to wait longer than 7 days if they don't get validator up and running without the slow down.

By the way, I have some pending credits from Aug with three valid returns, but so far no credit given. It is for a host I stopped using last October 14. As long it has this result, I can not delete it.

I went from an AMD 2800+ to a AMD 64 3200+, changed the cpu, obviously, the ram, the motherboard AND the OS, kept the machine name the same and they merged into one. I then brought the old 2800+ back on-line with a new name and it took right off with its new name and new identity.
You may THINK it does what you said, but this is what it DID!
