Searching only found very old threads so I'm asking here.

New Windows 7 x64 system AMD proc+8GB RAM+SSD+GTX750ti+Latest drivers and latest lunatics - not using radeon for Boinc as using both (or just radeon) in Lunatics sent up errors out the wazzou, just using 750ti. Using Vipre A/V and Malwarebytes Pro - latest versions and with exceptions for Boinc folders in Users and ProgramData.

System: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7442088

Boinc Seti (don't remember ever getting this for Milkyway but may be also) runs fine for 8 to 36 hours then starts throwing this continuously:

3/31/2015 6:10:27 PM | SETI@home | [error] exceeded limit of 200 slot directories
3/31/2015 6:10:27 PM | SETI@home | [error] Can't create task for 08se12ac.16964.2112.438086664198.12.42_1

If I totally shut down Boinc and then reopen, it will be fine for the same 8 to 36 hours. No real errors in the Event Viewer. Rebooting the system yields the same. Total uninstall and reinstall of Boinc and Lunatics yields same. Only thing I've noticed is that even when a totally shutdown Boinc, in TaskManager/Processes - the boinctray.exe process is still there. However, if I kill that and restart Boinc, it still gives me the same result 8 to 36 hours later. What setting have I overlooked?

This means you had many task started which go then to 'Waiting to run'

boinctray.exe process have to run if you want BOINC to detect when the computer is idle

Can you post the Boinc startup from the Event log please, something like the first 30 to 40 lines will do.

I have on many occasions seen BOINC has created extra slot folders for seemingly no reason. I just checked my current system that has been running only Milkyway for the past week or so. I had slot folders 0 to 5 instead of 0 to 4. With slot folder 5 being empty & having a creation date of March 30th. Just as you are seeing restarting BOINC cleaned up the extra slot folders with BOINC 7.2.42.

If BOINC isn't going to do a very good job of housekeeping perhaps there is a way to automate the cleanup of the extra folders.

I wonder if the debug flag <disk_usage_debug> would show anything useful or just disk usage.

Your host hasn't returned any work since the 27th March:

Validation pending tasks for computer 7442088

I suspect the apps are all going into temporary exit, So Boinc startes another Wu, which does the same, But why?

It is something with Boinc as I get the errors with Seti or Milkyway. Also, now it is starting the errors immediately, even if I completely shutdown Boinc and restart.

I set that debug flag for disk use but since it now can work on no units - getting slot error immediately, it returns nothing on disk usage.

Is the Boinc Data disk on the SSD?

I assume so, do you have a conventional drive too, If so, can you uninstall Boinc, then move the whole Data directory to the conventional drive, then reinstall Boinc, and point the installer at the new position of the Data directory, any improvement?

There already is a thread on the Boinc Dev forums where apps constantly exit, Boinc is also installed on an SSD:

Bionic 7.4.36 only using 1 CPU core (or less)

I will try this and get back to you in a day or two, Claggy.

Right now that system is only using an SSD because the cheapo power supply it came with doesn't have enough SATA connectors to allow the regular SATA HDD to be used but I have another PS now and will use this as the excuse to get off my rear and swap it out.

Thanks for your help.

Can you manually check in:
C:\ProgramData\BOINC\slots\

... how many/which of the 'slots' (0 1 2 ... 199) are empty (no files inside)?
