Agreed.
Socializing on other projects is minimal at best.
Even getting tech support is difficult at times.
I think the Politics forum presents a healthy outlet for some who have differing views on what is for some a very highly charged and personal topic.

Things that at times, can be affecting their very lives. Not just their opinions.

The Seti project is a melting pot of so many lifestyles and world views. And I am sure there are many who would not be participating in the crunching if not afforded the luxury of these forums.
I know I would not be as active here with the computers if not for the outlet it gives me to share my life with others here.

Meow.

Bottom line. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Southern (USA) colloquialism.

One big thing I get from all of the seti forums is a sense of the point of view of people (mostly educated) from all over the world.

...

Number Crunching and the Cafe do promote a sense of community. This forum only serves to make me despair for humanity.

... and if we do close it, all those conversations that make you despair will end up happening in number crunching and the Cafe.

Just think of this forum like a quarantine zone.

I want to hear other people's opinions. I don't have to agree with them, but there is no where else I've come across like seti for the wide range of opinions.

+ 100 or something:)

However a few persons are Reading between the lines.
And it's rather difficult to a non-English person to express him/her/hen self here without beeing insultated by a few.

For instance when one says YOU GRUMPY OLD SWEDES.

Why on earth do you want to close the politics forum just because you don't like it Chris? If you don't like it stay away and I'm not going to answer your poll you've put up, it's unnecessary.

I've been very impressed on the whole with level of some debates on this forum and learned a lot from them.

Just please stop doing this, you are not the seti policeman.

Message 1658654 - Posted: 29 Mar 2015, 9:13:33 UTC - in response to Message 1658638.

So far only 11 people out of 1-1/2 million active crunchers have shown enough interest to reply to the poll. 3 say yes, 7 say no, 1 says close it temporarily. That bears out what Eric said all those years ago. There are two ways of looking at it, one says that the level of opinion is 2:1 in favour of keeping the forum, the other says that just 7 people all over the whole world actually want it. That is what I more or less expected.

I'm pretty sure the numbers arent that different if I were to ask the same question about removing every 'superfluous' forum here on the S@H boards. Sure instead of 10-15 out of 1 million active crunchers there would be maybe 50 out of a million crunchers who are against it. Not much better on the whole.

That is why I posed the original question, that given the hassle that the politics forum causes, which needs an International team of 7 volunteers to monitor, is it more trouble than it is worth? Three moderators say that they are happy to continue to deal with it, but that isn't surprising, they might not have a job otherwise :-)

I have to wonder, but why do you want this place gone? You are not a mod are you? So why do you care so much about the workload of Mods, who so far have all said they are fine with keeping this place around and who made a pretty convincing argument that having this place actually makes their job easier. And if you care so much about those moderators, then why do you reject their position by declaring that of course they dont want this place gone because they might be out of a job otherwise.

Perhaps you should stop trying to speak for all Moderators.

If the content and tone of the politics forum really bothers you that much, then why not take a break and just stick to the cafe? You've done it before.

You only need to look at the thread holder to see the reason for it.

I suppose he is tired of his modding duties.

As he has not spoken to such, I am of course just winging this, but that is my take.

Can I add my two pennies worth?

I haven't posted in the politics forum for a very very long time.

From a quick look around I can see that there are more than political opinions. There are often personal emotions.

From a pragmatists point of view. If the political forum was to close all you people with a lot to say might just end up in the cafe thread and I suspect that would be overload.

I often look in this forum but don't always know where to fit in to the general melay.

As a kind of outsider (SETI.. but cafe neighbour) I would like the oppourtunity to get involved once in a while.

I would not like to see the politics forum disappear but I wonder if the forum could do with taking a step back:

What about the idea that all new threads must have a title and purpose matching their intent and subject?

It's OK for the cafe to be fluffy as it's about generalities and sociability but because of passion of belief it might be better that threads in the political forum by agreement or rule were titled more specifically.

Obviously some people are unhappy in this political place but given it's a "political forum" shouldn't you all be able to come together and find consensus?

For my two cents and to be realistic a SETI forum doesn't have enough people to run a "political forum" in any open true sense. It does have a space in which opinions can be shared and aired.. but then if the opinions become too strong it stops being a forum (an Agora) and just becomes a voice for the opinionated.

Can I suggest a separate thread name "Politics Forum - Our Hopes And Directions For It's Future" in which nobody can post more than once a week and nobody can argue against another and no post is to include outside sources or more than 2 paragraphs (50 words).

Set the target for 1 month.

In this way each has time to consider and can only promote their hopes, aspirations and limitations equally.

At the end of this SETI can decide on the worth of it's resources.

Truth is. It's either a political forum to discover or a place to shout out opinions.

Am I out of order?

I'm just trying to avoid you nut bags ending up in the cafe with nowhere else to go.

:o)~

Yes there is a risk that some of the angst could spill over into the cafe and other places, and keeping it all in one place does makes it easier to deal with, I do accept that. I still reckon that if it was shut for a month as an experiment the majority of people would soon find somewhere else to vent their anger.

But some people only look in once a week, so I'll leave this open for a while yet to give all users a fair chance to contribute. I have to say that it is refreshing that the question has been allowed to be asked, and with the tacit approval of the Mod team.

That is the most abysmal lump of B/S you've ever posted. Why was that said?

It seems you still haven't learnt! It's time you woke up & realised there's a big wide world out there with many holding views of their own which will at times, disagree with yours. You want them shut up permanently because of that differing view?

This is 2015, not 1933.

No definately not!! What happened was Chris made the first post here in a different thread, I decided that if this was going to be debated in needed to be in it's own thread.

To do that I had to "create" the new thread and then move Chris's post into it.

I then hide my "place holder" first post. It is the quickest way to do it.

My name then shows as the thread OP.

My name on the thread has no bearing on my feelings.

Quite the reverse, I do not want to see it closed, I am certainly not "tired "of being a mod. So please read nothing into my starting the thread.

I think it was reasonable to ask the question about it's validity, and the answer so far is a majority view to keep it going. Fair enough by me.

This isn't the first time you've done this, so what really is your agenda?

Wasn't the answer from the 1st "survey" good enough for you?

To be fair attitudes change over time, so do the moderators.

I can see no harm in asking this question now and again.

It also allows the current moderators to see how people feel, which is important.

That's a fair point. However, when the question itself is loaded in referring to a statement from the past to close down just one section when what was stated was the closure of all sections.

It was asked of Janne in what would he do if the politics board was shut down, there's an even better question for Mr S: -

"What would you do every day if the boards where shut down completely?"
