Hello! I didn't know If what I search exist, but If you know a way to do what I search, I will very appreciate the help. I have actually two computers. One for personnal use and one other for Boinc running 24/7. To use my two computer in the same time with only one keybord and one mouse I use a very good software name Synergie http://synergy-project.org/. This is what my setup look like : But the thing is that I have two other computers, but I can't move them, they are fixed. So I can have my mouse and keybord into any computer into my home network, but I need something to do the same thing that Synergie, but with the computer screen this time. Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P This is what I would need : Thank you in advance if you can help me! (PS: A KVM switch didn't work, the computers are pretty far away) |

I use a TINC VPN and TightVNC for similar purposes. Pretty complex to get running, but the most stable and powerful lightweight solution I found so far, given I don't mind tweaking obscure configuration files and router settings manually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinc_%28protocol%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TightVNC "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. Yes TightVNC works great for remote administration. If your not going outside of your home router, setup should be a snap. |

I'll third the use of VNC (Virtual Network Computing) for remote access. If the computers are on the same network I actually found TightVNC a breeze to set up. If the computers are on different networks then I can imagine it involving VPN or port forwarding which might get a bit more complex, but still works well. VNC works by opening what would be displayed on a monitor attached directly to the computer you're connecting to in a window on the computer you're sitting in front of. It won't allow you to play games - the 'screen' can't refresh anywhere near fast enough - but it's absolutely fine for things like using Word, Excel or... controlling BOINC. ~W |

Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P If you're only looking to press buttons in BOINC on the remote computers, BOINC already has the ability to control other computers running BOINC software. There's no need for additional software. See this BOINC FAQ for more information on how to set this up. I use this method to control BOINC on all machines on my network and it works great. |

Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P It's not 100% clear, but I think I read into the opening post that the computers he wants to control are "pretty far away" and not in his home network. If some sort of wide area network is involved, I doubt BOINC's internal networking is going to work - the client/manager RPC comms are simply too chatty, with a full RPC every second. |

Well thank everybody, I will check what you give to me ^^ Thank you! Also, about my pretty far away computers, they are all into my home network, but I use far away because if I want to use a KVM switch, I would need a very very long cable ^^ |

In that case I just use efMer's BoincTasks, and add each of my hosts :) "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. And unlike most advice, it's backed up by proofs." -- Algorithms to live by: The computer science of human decisions. |

Well thank everybody, I will check what you give to me ^^ Thank you! I use VNC software at the OS level for my other machines to run them headless. You can also get hardware devices that allow a VNC sessions & give you full remote management. Allowing you to power on, reboot, or shutdown the system from your remote session. For controlling BOINC I mostly use the built in function of BOINC manager & boinccmd, from command line, for my needs. Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P Being interested, I tried this setup and it allowed me to access the remote boinc client, but won't show any projects or tasks running on it? P. |

Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P Does BOINC show connected in the lower right-hand corner? |

Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P Maybe there weren't any projects or tasks running at the time? It works fine for me, and it works across BOINC versions (with minor quirkiness). I keep a v6.12.34 Manager open on this machine, monitoring a remote v7.4.36 - tasks and all. The only thing it can't do is to re-start the remote client if it's crashed or hasn't even started yet. |

A few years back, I had two machines in my office at work that were crunching and I was managing BOINC on them from home just fine. I used Hamachi and then just used BOINC Manager's built-in ability to connect to remote hosts. Worked great for me. For the time being, Hamachi is still free for up to five clients in one network. I imagine they'll eventually do away with that being free at some point in the future, but for now, it'll be fine. Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P No, it alternates between connecting and disconnected P. |

Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P Oh it has a project & tasks ok, it's merrily crunching away. it appears, for whatever reason, the local manager can't connect to the remote client. More investigation required. I've tried both the pc name and its IP addresas. I can VNC into that pc ok,l and there's no firewall currently running on it. P. |

Tis software didn't need to give me a high quality picture, only what I need to press button on Boinc :P Did you add an exception on the computer to be controlled's firewall? I believe you need to have port 31416 open on the receiving computer. |

and there's no firewall currently running on it. Hmm.. I would bet that even though a firewall isn't running, blocking is still occurring. |

and there's no firewall currently running on it. you're probably right, but what is causing the blockage I have no idea <sigh> c'est la vie ;-) P. |

and there's no firewall currently running on it. Try opening the port in your firewall anyway. The implication was that your firewall was still blocking even if turned off. Also, did you create the remote_hosts.cfg file that doesn't exist by default, and putting the hostname or IP address of the computer that will be connecting to it on a singe line? |
