I can't seem to find the discussion thread relating to this recent action. I hope they really don't think they could pull such a feat off. But on the other hand I hope the Navy department still takes the threat with some seriousness. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. Just send a few more and ..... |

This months edtion of Sea Classics had two pictures of that wooden built up barge. One from above where It looked pretty realalistic. The one from sea level looked boxy as hell. The story line was that intell figured Iran would blow it up and say> SEE we are not afraid of the American devils. I havent seen or heard anything about it since I read the article though. So what is supposed to happend? Edit- Very impressive what modern missles can do to a mostly wooden structure. If I was really rich Id build a pirate shipe and a British ship of the line from about 1820. Then see how they could hold up against just a WW2 Fletcher class destroyer. Iran must be really scared of sanctions to put out this cartoon crap. [/quote] Old James |

There was some discussion on other Forums that the whole exercise was for a movie. |

All US Navy surface ships are equipped with, in addition with other systems, at least one CIWS Phalanx gun mount which could easily deal with the missiles Iran used to sink their own toy carrier. Back in the 1980s it was demonstrated that just one CIWS gun could lock on to and knock down up to six incoming missiles that were launched from different sources at the same time. The CIWS is designed to be the last line of defense against anti-ship missiles. |

Most modern warships have anti missile defences. Of course they do. But that Iranian barge had no defense system so their demonstration of how easily, in their minds, an aircraft carrier can be destroyed was pure propaganda.
