ACTIVE SUNSPOT:
A sunspot has emerged near the sun's southeastern limb, and it is crackling with strong flares. The most powerful so far, an M9-class explosion on March 7th, produced a moderately-strong radio blackout over the Pacific side of Earth. Check http://spaceweather.com for images and updates.

Interesting, but I think this belongs in the science section as it has nothing to do with SETI

I could find nothing in either thread to 'fit this in'. It IS SETI related as the signals we analyze are RADIO SIGNALS.

THE ERUPTIONS CONTINUE (updated): For the 4th day in a row, sunspot AR2297 is crackling with solar flares. The latest, an M5-class eruption on March 9th at 23:53 UT, produced a low-frequency radio blackout over the South Pacific. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the explosion's extreme UV flash:

SOHO coronagraphs have observed multiple CMEs emerging from the blast site. The confusing mass of plasma clouds is traveling mostly away from the sun-Earth line. Nevertheless, one or more of the CMEs could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field in the days ahead. Stay tuned as NOAA analysts sort things out.

From Spaceweether March 11, 2015 http://spaceweather.com/

ACTIVE SUNSPOT TURNS TOWARD EARTH: Sunspot AR2297 is crackling with M-class solar flares, and it poses a growing threat for Earth-directed eruptions as it turns toward our planet this week. This 4-day movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the sunspot moving into geoeffective position:

During the days covered by the movie, AR2297 more than doubled in size. Moreover, it developed a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field. Such a magnetic field is unstable to the kind of explosive magnetic reconnection NASA will study using its MMS fleet, slated for launch on March 12th. Mindful of the sunspot's development, NOAA forecasters have estimated a 60% chance of M-class flares and a 10% chance of powerful X-flares on March 11th

Here it is folks...

From Space Weather 3/11/15 18:00 UTC

X2-FLARE AND RADIO BLACKOUT: Sunspot AR2297 has just unleashed a strong Earth-directed solar flare (March 11 @ 16:22 UT). Extreme UV radiation from the blast, which measured X2 on the Richter Scale of Flares, is causing HF radio fade-outs and other propagation effects on the dayside of Earth, primarily over the Americas: map. Meanwhile, natural radio emissions from the sun suggest that a CME might be emerging from the blast site at speeds exceeding 1,400 km/s (3.1 million mph).

Well, fortunately so far it has had little or no effect here in central Florida.

Hey, my car battery has actually gone flat! Honestly!

I wish to register a complaint.
Oh yes?
I bought this here battery not one hour ago in this very garage. Now look at it
Lovely dimensions the Exide hasn't it?
Never mind that my good man, what are you going to do about it?
It's pining for the Fijords
No it's not, it's as flat as a pancake,
Hello Mr battery ..... thump thump, now that is what I call a dead battery

To be continued ....

"CHANCE OF SUNDAY STORMS: The X-flare of March 11th might not be done affecting our planet. According to computer models, a CME propelled into space by the explosion will sideswipe Earth's magnetic field on Sunday, March 15th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms if and when the CME arrives."

ST. PATRICK'S DAY GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Arriving earlier than expected, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on March 17th at approximately 04:30 UT. At first, the impact sparked a relatively mild G1-class (Kp=5) geomagnetic storm. Since then, however, the storm has intensified to G4-class (Kp=8), ranking it as the strongest geomagnetic storm of the current solar cycle. This storm is underway now. Before sunrise on St. Patrick's Day, bright auroras were sighted over several northern-tier US states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, the Dakotas and Washington. Marketa Murray sends this picture from Dalton Highway in Alaska:

"The auroras were insane," says Marketa who regularly runs a photography workshop on the Arctic Circle. She has seen a lot of auroras. "I have never seen anything like this.

I would be awestruck if I saw auroras like that. Seriously majorly tripped out. I did notice Venus was super bright in The Western sky, about 30 degrees up, tonight.

Here we go again, Mother Sol is spitting again.

"X-FLARE: Emerging sunspot AR2339 unleashed an intense X2-class solar flare on May 5th at approximately 22:11 UT. Radiation from the flare caused strong radio blackouts on the Pacific side of Earth, interfering with communications at frequencies below ~20 MHz. The blast also hurled a CME into space, but not toward Earth. This event could herald a sustained period of high solar activity, as AR2339 appears to be large and explosive. Check http://spaceweather.com for more information and updates."
