I am considering upgrading my Rig, its currently running a xeon 3360 which is doing ok for number crunching. However I wanted to add a video card as my current GF210 doesn't work anyway.

I was thinking about this :

ASUS AMD R7 260X 2GB

It's $140.00 @ Frys

http://www.frys.com/product/7930260?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Or maybe this:

Radeon R7 250 BOOST

Its $99.00

http://www.frys.com/product/7918660?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Would either one of the above cards be worth it? I want to avoid upgrading everything else so and I am trying to keep the costs nominal.

For SETI the current budget favourites appear to be the Nvidia GTX750 and GTX750ti, both are famed for their throughput per watt and throughput per $
A quick look suggests they are similar in price to the AMD R7s you are looking at.

I have an R7 240 2Gb which works well for its size. Those cards should do about twice what mine does.

It's not a 980, but the price is much lower.

What is considered faster for Seti? An ATI card like the ones I am considering or the 740/750's ?

Thanks

I assume you are talking about Nvidia 740/750.

If you are going to go that route, I would stay away from the gt 740. The GTX 750/750Ti are better options for productivity and speed.

The 750Ti just edges out the R7.

Just my personal 2 cents worth....take it for what it is worth.

With 9 rigs and 22 GPUs online, I am damned thankful that none of them are ATI.
nVidia drivers just work with few exceptions.

I read all the time about ATI users and their troubles with certain drivers working or not working mostly.

I'd be even more of a raving lunatic if I was fronting ATI cards.....LOL.

Well... It looks like this card may need to go back. I did the following:

1) Purchased an ASUS Radeon R7 250 ($99.00)
2) Removed my GF210
3) Installed Card
4) No Post, First it couldn't find the boot disk then it would go no further than a black screen @ post with nothing but a blinking cursor.
5) Reset BIOS confirmed latest BIOS etc.

Put my old GF210 card back in the system worked like a charm. This board is ain intel DP35DP board with a Quad-Core Xeon 3360. It has a single PCI Express Slot.

It does says its a pci express 2.0 slot, and the card should have worked but well it didn't. I saw another post on here saying I may need a different monitor or that I may need to use a DVI connection. I am going to try that and then if it fails return the card.

PSU overloaded?

Is there an extra power connector that needs to be plugged in??

Good luck!

Happy fast crunch in

Nope... Not on this card. The box has a 500 watt power supply. The board wont even post when this specific card is plugged in.

I returned the card. I remember that I had a Radeon 4870 in storage and am going to get that. Do you think a radeon 4870 will work for Seti ?

Sounds like the R7 250 may have been DOA. Perhaps you could try testing it in your other machine?

The HD4870 can be made to work, but you will have to use an older driver as support for the older HD4000 series has been removed in newer drivers. Anything from Cat 11.12 to Cat 12.4 should be good.
I'm pretty sure the current apps will still work, for now, with that card. It should be noted that the HD4000 series only had "beta" OpenCL support.
