Most are gonna consider me an idiot for posting this, but....here we go.

I know there are some gentlemen on the Seti project that are well more off than I am. And I am not doing too badly.

The question is this.

Is there anybody that is well enough off that they would endow me with a fund that I might pursue the things that I really should be able to do before I pass on?

I had a project I once started to digitize most of my musical library to save for all others to enjoy. Drifted off into Setiland.

I still have the monitors and amps I need. I still have the Denon..would need another Ortofon cart. Moving coil is best, but most of those records were cut at higher amplitudes and the way they were mixed, it would not matter if it were a moving magnet...
The arm on the TT is fine, just need a new cart to mount. I can handle that.
I would probably need a website with a bunch of space and bandwidth to download and save the trove to. Audio clips are not a big thing, until you increase the sampling rate. A few tbits would get us started.

There was an audio processing bit of software I would need as well. Cannot recall the name at this moment. Did declicking and handled the odd bit of RIAA equalization that some old things required to get the sound right.

I also have a full set of 1/4 inch studio tapes of an old radio show called the History of Rock and Roll.
I have a couple of Scully decks that can still play it. I might need to find a few coupling transformers from the output of the decks with is low z to high z, which matches consumer stuff. I was an audio engineer, I can handle that also.

There are some amazing things in that series.
It's like, 20 full reels of 1/4 inch tape at 15ips. Played once from the network over air and then into my hands.
It would take me a couple of months to tear down everything and rework the kitty crunching studio into an audio reprocessing studio.. but I could do that.

I have most of the bits to put it together. I still have the entire JBL setup for monitoring...including that 18' subwoofer to monitor subharmonics.
I have DBX impact restoration, I have DBX limiters...
But most of them would have no use in this project, as I would like to maintian as much of the original dynamics and equalization as possible from the original discs. If you were project manager, I would also take some direction from you, if you were qualified.

Lend me your ear, kind soul. I have a project in mind, the only thing stopping me is reality. You can change my reality if you wish.
Last note....
Whether you like her as an artist or not, I have two vintage discs of Joan Baez's that I should love to save in digital history. Her first album. One copy in minaural, one in stereo. I forget which is unopened.

I know, an astounding request. I also happen to know there are a few here that could grant it. I also know this is the one and only forum in the world where I might contact another, as Julie Andrews said, so inclined.

I am 58yo, and ready to make this the rest of my life's work.

Let me know.

NOTE...
IF you want to go there, and are willing to support my project, you could ship me any discs you would want so preserved. Just insure them for 10x the value you perceive them to be. At least. I shall return the originals to you, if desired, or save them for some preservation efforts I am involved with.

2nd NOTE...
I already own the premises. I can rework the home into a studio or anything else I wish to. I know about such things, but this is not about recording new work, so the accoustics are not a factor. I won't need major mixing decks. Just a few toys with my computer should be enough.

One of the reasons I've stuck with this apartment for so long is that I don't pay for utilities. One rent bill covers heat, hot water and of course electricity. I'm only using about $100 a month worth of it for crunching so it's not like I'm bankrupting the property managers (also don't need the heat from the radiators as the computers take care of that)... slightly less than a tenth of the rent. There are still plenty of apartments like this, and if this one ever goes to metering, I will be moving immediately.

I'm still not convinced Alberta should be considered habitable for human life. I hear that if you go outside in winter you can die within minutes.

You forgot to allow funding for the legal fees you'll run up by offering music online that you don't own the rights to.

I have considered that.
I think many artists would be flattered to have their live's work preserved for all time digitally.
It would not be a for profit enterprise, just for the love of the music.
Points taken, I could ditch Seti and divert the money to another work of love.
How does one choose, then? I could also start to consider whether I might live beyond my means in a few years after retiring from the fire truck factory.

I don't think that far into the future. I am obsessed with the past. Always looking back to where I was and could have been. Kpax was a lovely place.

Ok Mark, I'll give you a bold answer to your bold question.

Nobody will send you any money because you would probably spend it all on more whiskey.

Just a little sliver of the big picture, Chris.
Just a tiny bit of it.
Nothing at all compared to what I have envisioned, so don't even try to make slight of it with that ridiculous comment.

I happen to own a complete master studio set of this entire radio show.
I suspect that to the right person, the lot is worth ten grand or so.

Only one tape has a break in it. And that is just a tape break, nothing really missing. I just don't have a splice block anymore.
I also own a couple of Scully studio decks that can play it properly. 1/4" tape at speed is a wonderful thing to behold. Mine are set up for 1/4" tape, but I have a full set of 1/2" heads for one of them as well.
Digital is all fine and well, but you have no idea what 1/2" tape running at 15 ips is capable of. I saw a guy demonstrate it in a local studio years ago and just blew my socks off.

Recently Watched Documentary 'bout Muscle Shoals. Wonderful Stuff.

Many Many Many Documentaries concerning The Great Recording Studios have been made in Last Few Years. Dave Grohl has done Some Beauties.

One The Other Day 'bout All The Small, Tucked Away Studios in NYC and, of course, The Brill Building.

VH1 has Done Countless Retrospectives/Documentaries/Real Life of Real Peoples in Music.

It's A Frakkin' Industry Now. The Resources to Discover Our Music Past is Out There Big Time.

Heck, I watched Django Reinhardt kickin' ass with His Two Fingers the Other Day. Incredible.

It's Out There.

If You Gots Stuff to Add to 'It', then Fantastic. But, Like I Said, 'it' 'is' An Industry Right Now and People are Putting The Shat Out There Constantly.

I Watch 'it', All The Time.

Muscle Shoals has The Swampers-Lynrd Skynyrd-and S E T I at H O M E has...

You. So, Do what you Gots To Do. Contact one of These People doing The Work, maybe they Can Incorporate Your Stuff in Their Next Music History Show/Documentary/Movie.

Yep.

I have the first 4 Rolling Stones Vinyl LP's in mint condition complete with unmarked covers. To me they are priceless, to others they are junk, considering that they can buy digitally remastered DVD's of all of them. Memorabilia is by it's very nature very personal, and mostly un-realistic.

True enough. I do realize that what I have is, as you say, priceless to me.
Much of it does exist in the digital domain already, but I assure you I have many things here that have never been so.
Your Stones albums might be worth more than you suppose. Certainly not for the music they hold, but to an LP collector...the first 4 albums, all together, all mint. To some, it's the medium that is the magic.
Just sayin'..

I have an off-and-on project going to transfer all my LPs and Cassettes to digital. I have a Crosley music box with a CD-recorder, and a USB cassette player that will play into my PCs and software to do the digital conversion. All going onto a 2TB external drive. Big issue is time - because you have to stop after every song/track. Not as simple as loading a CD into iTunes, Windows Media Player, or Realplayer.
