The hunt for alien civilisations may need a rethink. A new paper argues that the signals we're listening for might not be the ones ET would choose.

But Messerschmitt thinks there's a workaround. Existing software, such as that used for the SETI@Home project, which processes millions of signals using idle home computers, could be adapted to extract information from a signal. SETI@Home looks at many channels at once seeking narrowband signals, but it could be programmed to look for broadband ones instead.

Isn't that one of the purposes of AstroPulse... to search for broadband signals?

Not the dish but we may need another receiver.

there is an idea to put two on L4 & L5 satelites...with third in L1 or L2...which would make a fine pinpointing antena based telescope with diameter of almost 2AU!

We monitor billions of channels but we are so very far from other star systems unless beamed at us the message would be a carrier wave at most. Same with any communications bleeding out of our little planet. We missed the message sent out centuries ago or we are being ignored because they find I Love Lucy repugnant. Sheer distances any communication would have to be a type of burst communication. So as much information can be sent in a short time. Everything is moving ETs home planet and us. I am puzzled that we havent found something anything at all but just noise of background of billions of galaxies. Our old communication are about 70 lightyears out. We are finding planets earth-sized at 55- 455 lightyears. Thats 1,350,000 years away and 5 million years travel. ET is not coming for a tea party. At best a one way trip.
