That's great, it's been rummored that it would be free to Win 8 and 8.1 but this is the first I heard they were going back to Win 7 as well. Time to build a new computer. Anybody want some copies of win xp? |

Who's in charge of numbering at Microsoft? 1.01, 1.03, 1.04, 2.0, 2.10, 2.11, 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, 95, NT4, 98, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10? Bet their kids do well at school! 10 green bottles, standing on a wall, 10 green bottles, standing on a wall, And if one green bottle should accidentally fall, They'll be 8.1 green bottles, standing on a wall! Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Who cares what it's called...what does it do? Very little that the previous incarnations didn't. New software now gets designed for Windows 10 and isn't backwards compatible to previous generations of Windows, forcing many people to upgrade their hardware as well, making tons of money for the computer industry and causing large quantities of defunct hardware to be thrown away. Or snapped up at a knockdown price by Linux geeks like me, so maybe i shouldn't complain too much. :) Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

So the cheapest I can find Windows 7 on Amazon is around £40, I wonder if that will go up when people realise that for £40 they can go from XP/Vista to 7 and then to 10 (XP would be a re-install I know). Hmm Windows 10 for £40 |

Who cares what it's called...what does it do? I agree. Too much emphasis on the name, not enough on what it does. Obviously, there's not going to be much revolution that is going to meet the standard of "killer OS" many seem to require before they justify an upgrade. I think those days are largely over. Rather, most new OSes are going to be evolutionary and simply support newer standards or fix fundamental flaws in the kernel that can't be easily fixed in previous version without an overhaul. Personally, I think I'd prefer Windows 10 just for the return of the Start Menu combined with the snappiness of Windows 8 over 7. |

No. Today was a monumental day for us on the Windows team because we shared our desire to redefine the relationship we have with you – our customers. We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.* |

Who's in charge of numbering at Microsoft? Not to be too pedantic, but I think it is important to point out that you're combining two different lines of Windows; one which is now defunct and one which started life out at version 3.1. |

Who's in charge of numbering at Microsoft? If they're both called Windows, that only adds to the problem. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Who's in charge of numbering at Microsoft? True enough. But also remember that naming and version numbering are also two different things. As an example, Windows 95 was the name of the OS, but it was version 4.0.950. I guess that adds to the confusion as well. |

Who's in charge of numbering at Microsoft? There wasn't a problem. What most people call Windows is the desktop version. Windows NT4 and 2000 were the server version. |

Who's in charge of numbering at Microsoft? Actually, they are server/workstation. |

I am using Windows 8.1 since I found it installed on a HP PC I bought (but got no DVD). But I installed Virtual Box on it and am running CERN programs written in Scientific Linux, which is Red Hat plus libraries developed by CERN. Tullio |
