http://www.cnet.com/news/windows-7-support-ends-today/

Effective yesterday, January 13, Windows 7 has been changed to extended support (meaning you have to pay if you need help) and no further non-security development. Another five years and it goes the way of XP.

The article ends with a brief video of a preview of Windows 10. Looks to me like they took a step from 8 back toward the greater comfort and familiarity (for us old fogies) of 7.

They will have to do something if they want people to accept Windows 10. If you check out the market share for Windows 8 versions. They are not really taking off.

The part about MS no longer offering free support is correct and they will not be adding any additional features in the future, but it is my understanding that security patches and updates will still be issued until 2020.

Here's a better explanation of the Windows 7 support situation:

"Peter Bright @ ArsTechnica" wrote:
Contrary to headlines you may have read today, Microsoft isn't dropping support for Windows 7 today. The operating system is still supported and will continue to receive security updates for at least another five years.

Today is the last day of Windows 7's "mainstream support" period, with the operating system now entering "extended support." But the implications of this for most of us are negligible. Microsoft will no longer release new features for the operating system, but there's nothing new there: even during its mainstream support period, such updates were few and far between.

No-cost phone support also comes to an end, but this too is essentially irrelevant to most Windows users. OEM preinstalled copies of Windows aren't generally eligible for phone support from Microsoft anyway, as it's up to the OEM to provide that assistance. Paid support options are unchanged, and they'll continue to be available for the duration of the extended support period.

One of the things they're doing is cycling out 7. 8 will be three years behind it. I wonder what they'll call the one after 10.

I suppose no one will miss Vista much. I'm typing this on Vista, but I'm not in love with it.

Windows versions seem to be kind of like Star Trek movies. They alternate good and bad.

Vista isnt bad. Its was a lot differant than XP and its a lot differant than Win 7 I call it the tween windows. As vista is my daily driver I dont have a problem with it. At Least it has proven( in my case anyway) to be as stable as XP was.
My other two crunchers are Win 7. Havent had a problem with them either. But for the most part they just crunch. I use Win 7 at work but just the programs I need to use for my job. I havent got into the nuts and bolst of Win 7 like i have had to do with Vista.

Take your choice, there are tons of alternatives! Just for example:

If all else fails, copy over calc.exe from a previous Windows, where is the problem? ;)

Well as someone that uses clean ghost images of OSs for testing it is rather annoying. Having to install software for a basic function after ghosting a system each time is rather annoying. Dropping calc into a folder in the storage partition might work, or Windows might be grumpy about it like it does sometimes.
It just seems really silly to me. It would be like removing notepad. Sure notepad++ has a lot more functionality, but when you just need a quick text editor to generate a quick .bat or something it is nice that it is there.

Message 1628096 - Posted: 15 Jan 2015, 19:34:50 UTC - in response to Message 1628060.

Brings back memories. I was commissioned to write an application - first under DOS, but quickly followed by a Windows 3.1 version. Alongside the main application, we supplied a range of word-processed information sheets, which users were encouraged to copy and adapt to suit local needs.

So we needed a format and application which satisfied all these requirements:

* Fully editable WYSIWYG text
* Embedded illustrations
* Full pagination, including headers/footers/page numbering
* All normal font and layout support
* Guaranteed to be available on all target machines, at zero cost, without separate installation

Windows Write fitted the bill perfectly.

Then Microsoft brought out Windows 95... I remember having a conversation with Microsoft, emphasising our (and our users') charitable status, and asking to what extent the new 'WordPad' application met our needs. Not a lot, as you'll have realised. What should we do, we asked? Well, you could send out a copy of Write with your application installer, they replied...

And so we did, well into the Windows XP era.

I was very unhappy when they didnt include Cardfile On my Vista machine. Jeez I had cardfile on my 3.1.1 system and migrated it right up to XP. I found a good alternate but had to manually type in 400 movies. Boy that sucks.

Would this be the same Gates, who said that no-one would need more than 1 Mega-Byte of RAM? This, comes from someone running 7 Pro (a good, stable OS, but not with the same level of customisation as XP) with 16 Gigs!

The quote was "nobody will need more than 640k of RAM" and it is a myth. Bill Gates never said it. Of all the stupid things he's said, and the marks he's missed, that wasn't one of them.

I always replace whatever calculator there is with a HP48 or HP50 emulator. Even on my tablets and phones. I can never work with those default calculators.

And for those interested in other OSes:

Take a look at "Top Ten Distributions". Yes, those are Linux :-) - scroll down to see what they look like.

And there are yet other OSes (such as the FreeBSD listed there at the moment)...
