Ok, I don't know what it is, but
it looks like a sort of friction
brake thingy...

Celt I have to give it to you, You were so close before, it is a friction brake thingy. The proper name is an Emergency Rescue Belay.

It's used in Spelunking. "This manual rescue belay can be used as a self belay or with a belayer. The two stainless steel pins keep the rope separated as it is reaved around the drum. With 3 raps around the drum this device allows a 600 pound load to be caught with a single hand and held in place with 60 lbs of pull."

I was looking for the word Belay.

Early sewing implement. For loin cloths or their colder climate equivalent. Obviously whoever was making it got interrupted by a fit of giggles so didn't finish sharpening it to a point. Then they had to invent weaving so that they could at least put it to some productive use as a form of shuttle thingy... possibly :)

The circle looks too perfect. Did they know how to do that, back then?

Well... to me, it looks like it's a drawn rendition of the whatdgemecallit - so maybe whoever drew it liked really really round circles - or maybe it was a really really round circle which is why they drew it really really round. *sigh* I suppose we may never know... :)

Early drumstick for enthusiastic drummers... to prevent them accidentally launching them into their audience? Could be attached to the wrist like playstation move controllers, or those nintendo wi things.

It does, I agree.

I sure like your elk divining rod idea. ;~)

I seriously doubt they had locks back in those days, but was it a key to something?

When the beta testing was first done
on this item, there were no keys or locks!
