At first, I thought it was carved out of solid wood, but now I'm guessing maybe it's a leather type of material, and it's a bellows of some sort... ? The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

Taking another look at the source web page, it seems the vertical shaft goes well above the horizontal part, approximately doubling the overall height of the tool. There is also a string or thin leather strap that attaches at the top and at one end of the horizontal part. And while it's about 500 years old, it's based on a much older concept. Is it a plum bob? Does look a bit like it, doesn't it? No. Let me review the hints so far. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Okay, next hint. The country of origin is France. I'm not sure how significant that is, though. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

No, and no. It may be time to declare the panel stumped and try again. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

No, and no. I am stumped. (Unless that was clue and it's a stump grinder?) |

No, and no. Lol. Nope. Okay, it's been 26 days since I posted this thing. J. Mileski might have known, but didn't want to win. So, (because I don't feel like finding another tool right now and doing this all over again) I'm honoring my earlier comment and declaring Annie the winner because I liked her guess of a chastity belt remover. For the record, it's a French pump drill. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |
