Taking another look at the source web page, it seems the vertical shaft goes well above the horizontal part, approximately doubling the overall height of the tool. There is also a string or thin leather strap that attaches at the top and at one end of the horizontal part. And while it's about 500 years old, it's based on a much older concept.
