List of elected/appointed women

About time the States "got with it" & maybe do a better job that those who went before.

Well to be fair, a lot of other much more progressive states haven't gotten their act together when it comes to electing women. The Netherlands would be a prime example of that.

Of course I understand Europe is not a Country. But much of European Culture is similar, and is very different, in some respects, from American.

Oh dear. Then I have to learn Russian:)
They don't even have the same alphabet as we have.
And Finnish, Swedish territory for more than 500 years. Perkele:)
Good thing if I did because then I would learn much of the Estonian language.
Norwegian and Danish I already know.
However we eat a lot of Italian food when watching US TV programs and shows.
And some Swedish companies shows ads where they speak English with an american accent without translation.

I forgot Latvian, Lithuanian, German and Polish who also are neighbours to us.

Would you agree that an 'Outsider' would see the similarity's, and an 'Insider' would see the differences.

Of course I do. We also have a lot of differences in our small country with only 10 million peoples:)
We also, like the US and many other countries, have several native languages

Regarding Sarah: Don't really understand the Political obsession The Left has with her. I believe her politics are Ridiculous. But...

She is Hot!

There was a very interesting film made about her a few years ago.

I won't post a link, it would fall foul of Rules 1 and 3.

Perhaps, as is Human Nature:
We see the Similarity's of Other's (Europe), and you see the Differences.
You see the Similarity's of Other's (The USA), and we see the Differences.
We may be talking 'Past Each Other'.

The word "you" can be a bit confusing to us Northerner.
In English you dont differentiate that word in singular and plural.
We do that by saying "du" (singular) and "ni" (plural).

Your statement. Do you mean "me" or "we"?

Do YOU understand?
Actually I do:)
Language barriers could be a cause for many funny things.
I got a letter the other day from my "boss" where he wrote "ijoo" in computer terms.
It took me about half an hour to realize that he meant "I/O".

Similarity's is spelt similarities.

European's is spelt Europeans.

Country's of the America's is spelt countries and Americas

Isn't English supposed to be your first language?

Well Americans can't spell colour, defence, doughnut, drive-through, centre, gaol, dialogue or haemoglobin either.

To be fair Simon that is a culture difference. It niggles me, but I have to accept it, albeit with probably bad grace :-( Basic grammar and the correct use of the apostrophes in the English language should still be the same though.

It took me about half an hour to realize that he meant "I/O".

I'd have gone back with GIGO :-))

What pained me was that the spell check built into Firefox gave most of those words red squiggles, and it's supposedly set to English UK.

Steam (gaming program) has the right idea, upon installation it offers a choice of 'English (Traditional)' or 'English (Simplified)'. No prizes for guessing which flag appears by each option.

I lost what felt like years of my life at school learning where the apostrophe goes. These things matter dammit!

FBI 'identifies Jihadi John'

Very interesting.

I mentioned this in the thread MET Two.
Here is a new update from the BBC a few minutes ago.

Makes me think.
Jihadi-John is from Britain
Jihadi-Jane is from the US.
Jihadi-Swede is from Sweden.

I wonder why these terrorists many are described as "extremely kind, gentle and soft-spoken, the most humble young person I knew".
It was the same when Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly, an Iraqi-born Swedish citizen who blew himself up in the Christmas rush in Stockholm 2010.
Two days before Taimour Abdulwahab blew himself up, he was at home with his parents in Tranås. "I met him outside the gate and he told me that he was happy and felt good," said a neighbor of the family.

Being young, maybe the thought of 72 virgins all to himself persuaded him otherwise.

Nope, typical bad tempered Swedish attitude to the world. Are you a relative of Janne because you sound just like him. What is it with you and your countrymen?

Chris, you need some chill pills today.

For the same reason that nobody at a funeral stand up and tells the truth about the deceased. No matter if he/she was a real A-ho**.... At a funeral everybody praises the dead, no matter what. (That unwritten rule is something i've been known to break though.

In polite society, it is simply seen as unacceptable to speak ill of the dead.

τὸν τεθνηκóτα μὴ κακολογεῖν Greece 600 BC

De mortuis nil nisi bonum dicendum est Latin 300 AD

I don't expect to be invited to any more funerals :-)

Good, and I suggest you don't go if invited either.

For the same reason so many here writes RIP in Café threads, where it's told someone has died, no matter if they knew the person or not, no matter if the person was known to be an A-ho** or not.

I will only join in if I knew about them and appreciated their life. There are many that I knew nothing of and therefore I don't respond.

In short: Misdirected social bullshi**ery. Being polite, where the truth would be more appropriate.

Swedish mentality

Chris, Chris, Chris:)
