Bob i don't think they would have to worry to much about contamination . It's one thing to be in low Earth orbit but to go to Europa i don't think anything on a craft would last the for long . The radiation is much higher beyond the Van Allen radiation belt .
I've herd people say that before as a excuse not to go . And then they put there idea to waste a few 100 mil on going somewhere else with a much lower chance of finding life .
If there is life on another planet then that is the most likely place so how about we stop wasting money going to places like Mars or Meteorites and just go to Europa

Obviously NASA and Congress haven't read 2010: Odyssey Two

ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA, ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE

:-)))

Yeah...but in 2000 we had Y2K, so couldn't do a mission 2001! :D

And the 2010 was scrapped also.. ;)

We should, as a group, quit inserting comments about a work of fiction into a discussion about what may be factual data. Such comments confuse some people into thinking something from a fictional movie is relevant to the discussion.

Bob - maybe these authors are closer to the truth than we care to admit ??

Don't get me wrong, Arthur C Clarke was my favorite all time Sci Fi writer and all details in his books have an air of authenticity to them. But it was still fiction. I have seen other quotes in the Science forum from time to time referring to Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and others that give the appearance that the poster believes the stuff really happens that way. When stating the power needs of some concepts, like warp drive, someone will chime in "why don't they just use a zero point module?" Most of us know such devices are currently fantasy and may be forever but they have become part of the folklore to the point where distinguishing fact from fiction has become blurred.

Could be like the bottom of our oceans near Black Smokers . Tube worms , shrimps , it's the most likely place so far in our solar system and outside it
The bottom of our oceans prove you don't need sunlight to have life just warm water and minerals life will find a way if there is a liquid ocean under the ice , it has on Earth at least twice

As regards the probe and melting through the ice pack, a nuclear powered heat source sounds like it would eventually lend itself to contamination. Any ideas what else NASA might use?

Lasers still require power--lots of it ; and the ice is 2 miles thick. Most likely if we try this it will require nuclear power.

How about blowing up the ice with a few tons of of thermite...

This video shows what 150 kg of thermite can do to a lake in Norway. They were trying to create a hole to connect with a tunnel for water to pass through to a lower area for hydroelectric energy production...

How to Blow up a Lake

If they could figure out how not to kill off the life, this might be a solution, no?

The article I read a while back indicated that they plan to melt their way through the ice with what is most likely a nuclear powered probe. Even if you wanted to I don't think explosives could open up a path through two miles of ice.
