Central heat and air goes a long way to keeping it closed up. Just in the warm weather do we open up the house. Until it starts getting uncomfortable.

I'll keep one window open an inch or two, just for a bit of fresh air, until the overnight lows get down to the 40s. That will be the bathroom window. Generally, I close the living room window (which is where I sleep) whenever the heat or AC is on. On a night that's just on the edge of being too warm, I might leave the back door open all night for more cross-ventilation. And maybe a fan in the living room.

Being of Nordic ancestry (German/Danish/Scots-Irish), and born in Wisconsin, I like it a little on the cool side. I keep the house at 65F(17-18C) in the winter time, but set the A/C for 80F in the summer to help minimize the power bill. Partly carry-over from my parents and their health problems, partly comfort, I run the main fan 24/7 for ventilation. Spring and Fall, I open windows all over the house. The kitchen and both bathroom windows are always cracked open for air exchange.

We are with you, the thermostat is set at 19C in winter.
I would only worry if the furnace ever went all the time,
and that has not happened yet.

Honestly, you guys with furnaces!! Those are industrial items that melt metal. They do not heat homes, they are central heating boilers. Open fires with back boilers went out in the 70's :-))

If I lived where Celt does and it's -40°C outside... I'd probably use a furnace :)

If i had my own house i would use a furnace.
My son has a brand new one in his house.
Its a much nicer feeling than with central heating.

I do not have a boiler. My heat is not steam or hot water. Natural gas burns to heat up a heat exchanger, then air blows over the heat exchanger and through the house. That is a furnace. Definition 3 at oed.com.

No boiler or heat exchanger in my furnace. Gas burner heats the air directly.

Speaking of warming, may I have a mug of hot chocolate? Thanks much.
