Hi again everyone, quick question here.

I've chosen to have my NVIDIA card only do AP WUs. As you all may know, the AP WUs aren't always flowing freely. Can anyone suggest how I might run Einstein@Home while there are no AP WUs, but then switch to the AP WUs while they are available? I've never balanced two projects before, so any help is much appreciated.

Thank you!

(PS, I've already attached my BOINC to Einstein@Home with no trouble. My question here involves purely the balancing of two projects.)

Just set your resource share on Einstein to 0 and allow new tasks. When Seti has no work it will pick up a BRP task from Einstein.

Thanks very much! Trying it now.

Hi Mherr170,

You also need to be running a version of boinc that actually does accept a zero setting.. The latest version doesn't! You will need a prior version that works ok with zero resource set,

Please be careful with the statement 'The latest version doesn't!', the 'latest' version (for Windows) is Boinc 7.4.36, that has the zero resource share fix,

mherr170 is running Boinc 7.2.33, and Boinc 7.0.64 on his hosts, these are already prior versions!

Hi Claggy,

I stand corrected, I've been having 7.4.27 shoved at me for a while on one project and assumed it was the latest version.

Since that's what I'm running I'll have a look at installing 7.4.36 soon.
[edit]

Having just looked via S@H homepage > download BOINC, the version on current offer is 7.4.27
Perhaps that should be changed to reflect the later version?

Regards,

It will be in due course. v7.4.36 is a 'release candidate', and will be promoted when sufficient people have tested it and given it a clean bill of health.

There is always a 'recommended' version of BOINC, which is what is offered on initial viewing of the download page - that's currently v7.4.27

But if you follow the link to the all versions page, you can always see older versions, versions for other platforms - and usually the next version currently in testing.

Boinc 7.4.36 is still classed as development/Beta (Edit: /Release Candidate), once the Devs are happy with it, or they do further fixes, then it'll be promoting onto that page,
In the meantime, you can find the download link if you hit the 'All versions' link.

Hi mherr170

I do similar with asteroids and seti mb. You can do it with the cc_config file.

I have a cc_config file that excludes seti MB from one GPU when asteroids work is available and a separate cc_config file for when asteroids is not available so that both GPU run seti MB.

I keep them in 2 separate folders in My Documents and just copy the one I want to use into the BOINC folder in Program Data. I then stop and restart the BOINC manager so it loads in the CC_config file.

Hope that helps

Thanks everyone for the responses, concerns, and suggestions!

I guess I lucked out with the BOINC versions, because setting the resource share to 0 worked great.

Over night, there were some EINSTEIN WUs going. But this morning, AP WUs are going while the EINSTEIN ones are "waiting". Looks to be working great.

Hurray!

One small issue though is that seemingly running 2 AP WUs on my NVIDIA made my ATI MB WUs grind to a halt. Guess I need to try just 1 AP WU at a time on the NVIDIA. Maybe not enough CPU cores? (4 free at all times)

Is there a particular reason why you run MB on ATI and AP on NV? MB runs quite a bit better on NV and the ATI AP apps use the hardware more efficiently than the ATI MB apps. On the machine that has both cards you might consider switching the task assignments around.

I'm using BOINC 7.2.42 since latest version doesn't work with 0 resource set. Question is, is there a way to not getting a notice every time I start BOINC about there's a new version available?

I'm using BOINC 7.2.42 since latest version doesn't work with 0 resource set.

As I said, the LATEST version for Windows is Boinc 7.4.36, and that is fixed, the latest 'Recommended' version might not be fixed, But since you're saying the latest version doesn't work, then your statement is wrong.

But no matter what, can you get rid of a new BOINC version notice?

Install the Beta v7.4.36, which has the fix for the issue you raised. And I'm not seeing the notice on my machines.

OK, guess I'll do that.

Yes, unfortunately my NVIDIA only produces about 90% valid MB results using lunatics. It requires a bit of baby sitting, system restarting, etc and I would just like to not have to anymore. But thanks for the information!
