Message 1699861 - Posted: 9 Jul 2015, 16:25:31 UTC - in response to Message 1699845.

I had a couple of power "bumps" this morning. Enough to fritz out the TV briefly, but not enough to kill the cruncher that's not on a UPS. The other cruncher and the Uverse gateway (and a few other minor things) are on a UPS.

I had the outlet for the tv and cable modem fail again briefly, I'm going to later on when I can see better, try and move the cable for the power strip to another outlet nearby. Nothing I like better than getting down on all 4's and then trying to get up, yeah I manage and it isn't easy to do either.

That's a big problem for me too. I must have something to lean on to get my body up high enough to get my legs under me. This is a real problem when I run the streetcar at the museum, when I have to check the oil in the air compressor before I start.

Yeah, I've had this problem since I was 12, that when I'm on My knees, they hurt, now of course I weigh almost as much as a male tiger, roar, roar, but with much less endurance. So getting up off My knees or even getting down in a controlled descent, is best done carefully and on a padded surface too.

I went out to water the garden and looked over the fence into the neighbour's yard and saw this.

Her cat and the raccoon that lives in the hedge taking a nap together.

Maybe because the cat has a stripy tale it thinks its a raccoon too?

Purvis moved out. I don't know where he went. Clearly he did not die under our deck, because we DEFINITELY would have noticed that!!!

Anyway, when Purvis moved out, Stripey moved in.

Where the three other skunks who visited us last night (Puffy, Little Stinks and Tiny Stinks) have their dens is a mystery to me.

The neighbors to our right are doing construction in their backyard right now, so it is unlikely that skunks live over there right now. The neighbors to our left have three dogs, so it is even more unlikely that the skunks live there.

The birds have been acting weird here. One flew inside my car this morning, while I had the door open in the driveway, and they've been grabbing ahold of the window screens on the house, looking puzzled. I don't understand what their problem could be; there's been copious rain all year, and no lack of food supply, as far as I know.

In the less urban areas around here it's not too unusual to have the tree clinging spieces of birds (woodpeckers, finches, sapsuckers) land on and cling to window screens. I used to have a red headed woodpecker that actually damaged the nylon mesh screen by hanging on it and pecking at his reflection in the glass behind the screen. Time of year and migration appears to dictate when, and what type of hanger-on'ers are around.

I know what you mean. Fortunately they don't come around here much. I
don't usually put food out in the back yard and, when I do, the raccoon
(and possibly an opossum) snarfs it up before any skunk would find it.
There is food on the front porch, though. I haven't seen any skunks
eating that. Don't know why.

Skunks are not climbers. If you put cat food on a table, for example, your raccoons will find it, your opossums will find it, but a skunk just will not be able to climb that high.

In our backyard the skunks eat birdseed from a ground feeder, birdseed that has fallen from a hanging feeder, grapes that I foolishly throw them and unsalted (animal grade) peanuts in the shell that I also throw them.

I've tried to scale back on the seeds lately to discourage skunks a little. I also have a new rule of feeding. I only throw grapes and peanuts if there is one skunk in our backyard. If I see more than one skunk now, I don't go outside to toss treats.
