A completely occluded ear canal is still only a conductive hearing loss and as such it cannot give you more than a 60 decibel hearing loss, maximum. Actually losing as much as 60 decibels just from ear wax would be very unusual and for it to happen in both ears simultaneously would be even more unusual on top of that. Generally it is kiddos with serious middle ear involvement who get those 60 decibel conductive losses. Ear wax is part of your outer ear. With a conductive hearing loss involving only the outer ear (assuming you don't have infection or something else nasty going on in your middle ears and assuming that your inner ears are working fine) you should still be hearing decently via bone conduction across all the speech frequencies. When you say that you are suddenly "80% deaf in both ears" that is very concerning. Anyone who experiences a sudden and unexpected hearing loss should seek medical attention. Chris, get thee to an ENT if you can, or beg the nurse for a sooner appointment. It is not physiologically possible to have a hearing loss as severe as what you describe from ear wax alone. |

But as always Annie is very gracious. At the moment I am about 80% deaf in both ears because the hot water during a bath and hair wash, without so much as a by your leave I might add, decided to re-arrange the apparent build up of ear wax, of which I was previously unaware. I heard some doctor's advice long ago that the proper way to clean the ears is to run the hot water in them while you shower. You sort of cup your hand under and around your ear so hot water gets in and stays long enough to melt the ear wax. Do that a couple of times. That's what I do and I've never had an ear wax problem. I also dry my ears after the shower using the evil cotton swab because I can't stand to have wet ears! ~Sue~ |

@angela _ I have had this a number of times before, and for the same reason. I am on of these unfortunate persons that do generate an excess of ear wax. Probably had the syringing 1/2 a dozen times over the years. What happens is that the hot water moistens the build up of wax enough to "re-arrange" it and deposit it against the ear drum itself, causing the temporary hearing impairment. I can hear traffic in the street quite well, if people speak up I can hear them quite well. TV at low levels I can't or if people speak softly. Go see a doctor. Please :) |

Well I never realized that hot water could make the ear wax problem worse. Sorry for the bad advice. Although I suppose it works for the average person. I don't advocate using a cotton swab in your ear. But like a lot of people, (1) I sometimes "do" differently than I "say" and, (2) I sometimes do things that are discouraged. ~Sue~ |

Olive oil dissolves ear wax. Its messy, but safe. Just put a few drops in your ears when you go to bed and it should wash out safely when you shower. I've never had a problem with ear wax myself, but my kids have and olive oil works. Just make sure you have a towel over your pillow! Reality Internet Personality |
