The kitties have gathered some of their spare kibbles together and sent a donation to help TNR one of the gurly ferals.
Hope your program is a big success, Suzie.

Got it. Thank you!!!!

You guys are the BEST!

You are quite welcome. It is not the first time I have supported TNR.

Yes, well the actual event will take place on Monday. Until then
feral cats will be trapped and transported to the clinics.

Right now this is a one-time event. No more ferals will be TNR'd
after Monday.

Ferals captured by the city animal control people will be TNR'd
for free. Citizens who trap ferals and carry them in will have to
pay. I plan on carrying in at least four. One has already been
trapped and transported. I'm certain that I'll be able to "trap"
three more, probably four, and possibly five. (One of the cats that
should be easily trapped has not been around for two days.) I'm
hoping to be able to trap more than that, but so far the cats
haven't sprung the humane trap. I know one was inside but he must
not have stepped on the "trigger" plate.

So yes, there is a deadline.

You fantabulous people have donated enough for four spays/
neuters.

Thank you again!

I should remind you that the donations were unsolicited and
quite a surprise.

Eric and I once trapped a skunk in one of those fix-our-ferals humane live traps. Working together we managed to release the skunk without either one of us getting sprayed, but if you catch something that is black and white and doesn't go "meow", we can give you tips on how to get the darn thing out of your cage.

I'd call animal control and let them get the skunk out of the trap... I'm not taking any chances with a skunk. ;-)

Animal control would have euthanized the skunk in the name of protecting the employee. That is why Eric and I knew we had to free the skunk ourselves. Skunks only spray as a last resort. After years of observation, I feel that Eric and I both know how to "think like a skunk". We were very nervous when trying to free the skunk, but we were successful in releasing it without harm to it or to us.

The strangest thing was that we trapped the darn thing around 2pm on a Sunday. Skunks are not supposed to come out during the day, and generally they do not, but this one had clearly not read the handbook. We knew better than to try trapping feral cats at night, so we only had the trap baited and set open on weekends between 10am and 3pm.

I think the skunk we trapped was a permanent resident under our back deck, as Purvis the skunk is now. When we set up the kitty trap on our deck, I think the little skunk below was just too tempted by the smell of food to remain beneath the deck until nightfall.

I'm glad skunk spray is last resort. At work one night I walked past a skunk at point blank zero range. I went out a open door to do something and on the way back I saw it. Hand standing tail up in firing position. I played statue and waited a couple of minutes for the skunk to decide to go away.

When a skunk raises his tail and puffs out the fur on his tail he is still light years away from wanting to spray you. With tail raised and fur fanned, all a skunk is saying is "Hey you!!! Did you happen to notice that I am a skunk? Perhaps you should give me a wide berth. Now leave me alone, I'm busy doing skunk stuff... like eating or nosing around until I find something to eat."

If I want to take out the garbage and Puffy, Little Stinks or ole Purvis is out on my patio eating birdseed, I have to work hard to get the skunk to even notice me and go under the deck. It is not enough to pound on my back door before I go outside. Most of the time I have to actually go outside, clap my hands loudly and stomp my feet on the wooden deck before one or more skunks will notice me and go under the deck. You've heard of Dances With Wolves? Just call me Dances With Skunks.

I am on a mission to get people to better understand skunks. They are beautiful animals who are terribly misunderstood.

A skunk is far more likely to spray another skunk than he is to spray a person. The males get a little territorial in the spring, and in California our "spring" can start in late January or early February. A couple of weeks ago my in-laws were visiting us. My mother-in-law and I were in the kitchen stacking dinner dishes and it was probably around 8pm. I heard two high pitched screams and I knew that two male skunks were "having words" in my backyard. I immediately ran outside to clap, stomp and give them a piece of my mind. It was just what was needed to distract them. Purvis went immediately under the deck and the invading skunk ran under our fence and out of our yard. When I went inside my mother-in-law was confused. She didn't know what in the world I had done. When I told her that I had gone outside to break up a skunk fight, she looked at me like I was a crazy person that her son should never ever have married.

Anyway, my goal that evening was to keep Purvis and the invader from spraying each other in my backyard. When skunks spray each other in our backyard, we generally smell it indoors for about half a day. I broke up the skunk fight by startling both skunks and it worked exactly as I knew it would work. My mother-in-law should have been impressed, not aghast.

Sometimes I don't get outside fast enough to break up a fight. Uli was visiting one time and a couple of skunks got into it in our backyard. By the time I noticed the screaming, one skunk was already chasing the other skunk and sure enough, eventually one of them must have gotten cornered and he sprayed.

It took me a long time to notice and to be able to consistently identify the sound of male skunks screaming at each other.

Poor Purvis has to work hard to defend his territory. He tolerates visits from Puffy and Little Stinks, and he even lets them run under "his" deck if they are startled, but he does not allow them to live down there. Little Stinks generally enters and exits out of the back of our yard and Puffy usually enters and exits from the left. Purvis knows a good deal when he gets one and he has no intention of letting some other male muscle in on his territory. Purvis has never had babies. That is how we know that "he" is a "he".

So the next time you encounter a skunk, don't freak out. Just be still and enjoy the experience. If the skunk even notices you, he will move one. If he doesn't notice you, you will be treated to a wonderful urban wildlife experience.

Well in all My years of living where I do(11 as of July 4th 2015), I've never seen a skunk, heard of a Bobcat, but no skunks, back in Hesperia We smelled a skunks emission, but We didn't know where that was at, since this event was beyond the property.

Hopefully in 4 years I can move this mobile home to Adelanto CA, it's less expensive than buying an already setup mobile home that's on its own land(about $4,091 to $14,000 for some land), but is a bit more involved than it was to setup here in 2006.

I think I would feel very fortunate to be sprayed by a skunk... :) and then I would feel very fortunate to have a bit of a shower or ten afterwards... :)

Being breakfast used to be a concern of mine though but I soon put that into perspective :)

Good evening everyone :)

Someone was very kind to me today :) And went a long way out of his way just to cheer me up... you know... from what were becoming, the dreaded doldrums :/ yes people... *pause to glare at doldrums* they can creep up on you know... thank you for a lovely afternoon Chris :) You have a heart of gold :)

Aww crumbs, she just beat me too it! Annie sweetheart it was a real pleasure to meet you again, and as you would expect a little token was presented to mark the particular day of the year. Annie still needs a stick to help her walk...

...and a Chris to pick it up when she drops it :)

...but is ably mobile which was good to see. What was even better to see was that she is still the same old Annie with the irreverent sense of humour, and a keen observer of all things Seti wise :-) Don't let your guard down!

:)))) I do love seti so :) and you guys and girls especially :)

Yes she did need cheering up, and if in some small way I achieved that I am a very happy bunny. Her full recovery has some way to go yet, but I am very happy that her particular OT nurse is covering all aspects very well indeed.

Ok I'm off on shed patrol - don't ask ......

:))))))
