Yes it was, and was meant to be, and of course an affectionate giggle at traditional female reactions in those circumstances. But would you believe it, all the burn your bra brigade got their knickers bunched up about it, and said it was insulting to women .....

....

Its funny how women take issue with being talked down to like children. Who wouldn't just love that?

..and btw, your comments about "burn your bra brigade" are pretty insulting and patronising too.

Women don't 'Talk down' to men?

Ask any man.

In a society where men still have most of the power and are still taken more seriously than women, I'd say men talking down to women is a bigger problem.

Look how many women had to come forward about Cosby before anyone even started listening. I wonder how many of them were told to "calm down dear" when bringing serious issues forward.

An Individual 'Talked Down to', by another Individual, is OK?

Saying that women do it to men isn't an argument against it being a bad thing to do to women.

What is an issue is that there is certain language that over the years has been specifically directed at women to 'put them in their place'.

Chris' comment to me was such language and as such has no place in this forum.

I don't think that women have any place to be "put in". Men and women are equal as far as I am concerned, and nobody should be talking either down because of their gender. Nor should there be any bias against either in terms of equal pay, opportunities, or glass ceilings etc. I am all for female equality and always have been, most of my best bosses were women, it was OK by me. But support that view around here and you get precious little thanks for it and a kick in the nuts.

+1.

However I'm on record here for saying exactly the same. Did come across "some" women in middle management who had no right to be there as well as "some" men.

Highlighting that does not make me sexist. The old saying "there's good & bad in all races" also applies to the sexes.

I am quite sure that I speak for everyone here when I say that we all have the utmost respect for ES99 and her views about feminism and female equality, I most certainly do. But it has to be realised that a lot of other people don't think that way, and the extremists on the fringe do not do the crusade any good. And yes it is a crusade, it shouldn't have to be by rights, but it is, and I support it.

But lets not get too thin skinned about it at times.

Please tell us how to run the crusade, Chris.

Fun watching the MCP's use backhoes to dig fast and deep. Although it isn't quite as much fun as watching a train wreck in super slow motion.

The leaflets warned that condoms and the morning-after pill put people "at risk" and make them "isolated".

So are they advocating abortions or advocating having unwanted babies?
If they're like the school i went to, they're probably advocating total abstinence.
I'm catholic (technically) so i should worry about it destroying my soul, but i'm also ginger, so i have no soul to destroy...

Most people accept that living together while engaged, for a while before marriage is a sensible thing to prepare for a life together. If it isn't going to work for whatever reason, best to find that out then rather than later.
Agreed. It would be like buying a car without taking it for a test drive.
Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

As we've seen in some of the rather patronising sexist comments on this thread recently, moving to a more balanced and enlightened 'attitude' and culture is in some areas still a long long way away...

Here's yet another example and one example where the numbers are suggestive:

Ellen Pao faces $1m legal bill in sexism case

Ellen Pao, the woman who took a Silicon Valley firm to court over sexism claims and lost, has been asked to pay legal costs of nearly $1m (£660,000).

Venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins has said it will waive these costs if former employee Ms Pao does not appeal against the jury's decision...

And for my own experience for my 'high tech' areas of work, the male-female ratio has been as extreme as 200:1 !!! For various areas I've seen in high tech, women seem to be seen as more of a 'non-tech support'.

All from too many years of 'stereotyping' and 'type-casting'?

Unfortunately, attitudes seem to be inherited and perhaps need a few generations to break out into new areas...

Interestingly, the far more pleasant office areas where I've worked have been where the male/female balance has been better balanced.

A crying need for better balanced education and less misogynist TV and religion?

Martin

So...

This Individual Accusation, was deemed Legally False.

This is why, one should not believe Every Individual Claim, about anything, as Gospel.

Except... So dubiously so that there is great temptation placed there to dissuade from taking the case further...

So... Also the case that the American legal system looks to be more of a gameshow gamble than of dispassionate judgement... "OJ Simpson" anyone?...

What was incorrect about This Ruling?

The only thing wrong is Martin's mind is hermetically sealed. It appears to operate like this, once upon a time a man discriminated against a woman, therefore all men always discriminate against women. Same thinking as a black man broke the law therefore all black men break the law.

Now, I'm sure Martin wasn't sitting in the jury box so he does not know what evidence was presented, nor did he watch the witnesses testify to know their creditability, so how he can form an opinion on this specific case .... he can't, but he can use a thought process like that outlined above .....

That might be what YOU alone think and an unfortunate example of your style of thought processes.

Or are you lost in your own prejudices?...

So... To clear one small point: The OJ Simpson example was used just to highlight how USA courts appear to be more greatly influenced by the flamboyance of the lawyers and the protagonists than by the actual merits of the case... All coloured yet further by unwieldy games of "plea bargaining"...

"Bargains" should be no part of Justice!

And I wonder if you even realise the difference between arguing/discussing the ideas being discussed, rather than simplistically going ad-homium (and ignoring any discussion)?

Same goes for sexism... Some men do not even realise they are patronizing towards all women... As seen in this very thread...

All a game of education and upbringing?

Another single example being touted as a universal truth. Not one word on the specific case.

The prosecution rests.

The point of inviting strippers, some of whom performed with snakes, was to attract large crowds to the deceased’s funeral – seen as a harbinger of good fortune in the afterlife. “It’s to give them face,” one villager explained. “Otherwise no one would come
