Following on from the original thread:

With this very positive note from a desperately heinous horror, maybe there is inspired hope yet?

Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai 'hopes to be Pakistan PM'

Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai has told the BBC ahead of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize on Wednesday that she hopes to pursue a career in politics. She said that she may even aspire to be prime minister of Pakistan once she has completed her studies in the UK.

Ms Yousafzai has been jointly awarded the prize with Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian child rights campaigner.

Ms Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen in October 2012 for campaigning for girls' education.

She is the youngest ever recipient of the prize...

Both Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi hold moving speeches at the prize ceremony.
A chair was empty in the hall representing the more than 66 million girls, who are deprived of education.

Symphysiotomy – Ireland’s brutal alternative to caesareans

It is this sort of horrific abuse that makes me passionate about keeping ideology out of decisions about women's health. That includes abortion, contraception, childbirth decisions and sex education.

I was going to post on this subject just before we got locked out of seti, ES :( I'm ashamed to say it slipped my mind. Appalling practise to "ensure maximum birth capacity" otherwise limited by caesarean :( with some truly terrible and tragic consequences for mother and baby :((((( Thanks you for your post :)

It should make you want to keep ideology out of all aspects of society.

Indeed, but some ideologies are so deeply embedded that it is difficult to prise them out, such as racism and sexism.

There are so many disgusting attempts around the world to control women. I read an article about what ISIS is doing that was so bad I couldn't even face putting it here. I also wanted to be sure it was true because it was so horrible before spreading it around.

Women must ever be vigilant to ensure that we aren't pushed back and lose all the gains we have made. Until we have an equal say in the halls of power I don't think we are truly safe.

If it was the same one I came across (Child Rape was one of the contents of their pamphlet), I don't blame you. Even I thought it would be stooping too low to post it.

Standard techniques of religion ideology. Divide and subjugate. You can't make them all obey at once, so you divide them into groups. If you divide them enough, discriminate one from another, then each is a small enough group you can subjugate them. Now you have the power and can't be challenged.

You mean standard techniques for anyone who wishes to dominate everyone. Its not specific to religion or even ideology.

Are you sure that someone who wishes to dominate everyone does not automatically have an ideology?

Absolutely. Its seeking power for the sake of power. Plenty of people do that, dictators especially.

I believe you just described an ideology, albeit a very simple one.

Hmm it depends. The term ideology has been used by several groups of people to mean generally the same thing, but with distinct differences. When taking the Marxist view/Political ideology, we are talking about sets of believes shared by a wide group of people, while in the philosophical sense it can also be something personal and based on the individual level.

I argued on the basis of the political/Marxist view on ideology, in which case a dictators search for power for the sake of power does not constitute much of an ideology (unless of course, that dictator would encourage his subjects to behave in the same way). But if you look at it from a philosophical point of view, I suppose you can argue it is an ideology.

For all those who think all police are bad...

Shocking

"The specialist sex-crime officers who investigated the rape complaint made by Eleanor de Freitas, 23, consistently refused to support prosecutors in a case against her for allegedly making up the allegations.

They were supported by their senior officer
, but overruled by Martin Hewitt, an assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan police after lawyers from the Crown Prosecution Service held a meeting with him."

It must be nice at the top of those ivory towers of theirs!

Sad waste of a life

2014: the year women won?
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/video/2014/dec/17/2014-the-year-women-won-video

Here is another positive part of that year:

First female bishop named as the Reverend Libby Lane

Reverend Libby Lane has been announced as the first female bishop for the Church of England, just a month after a historic change to canon law...

... The appointment will end centuries of male leadership of the Church and comes 20 years after women became priests...

... The first women bishop eligible to take up a seat in the Lords is expected to be announced in the new year...
