Help find an Ebola cure with your computer or Android device. World Community Grid is partnering with The Scripps Research Institute to help scientists find a cure for Ebola through our newest project - Outsmart Ebola Together. BTW, I been supporting WCG projects for years, but I heard about this one here first. |

I saw it first on the research page and then the next day they sent an email with information on it. I added it to my projects and currently have several work units to be processed. I hadn't processed WCG units for over a year because they stopped supporting Power PC MACs so the project left me instead of me leaving the project. The new computer is supported but due to a problem in BOINC I had to figure out a work around in order to join it to the project. As the result, even though I needed a project I only ended up processing about a weeks worth of work so far on the new system. |

I have sent money to dr.Gino Strada, the founder of the Emergency team who is now in Sierra Leone fighting Ebola. One of his doctors has fallen ill and is now in Italy in a critical conditions. But I refuse to have anything to do with IBM because when I was searching for a position with them, the interviewer asked me what interested me in IBM. I told him that I was interested in scientific computing, I have a degree in theoretical physics. We don't do any scientific computing, was his answer, and I was not hired. Later I worked with Honeywell Bull at Trieste Area Science Park as head of the Unix Bull Laboratory. Tullio |

They have constructed one of the largest if not the largest computers for research and they pay for World Community Grid. IBM is many divisions and they are for the most part independent of each other. An example would be the people who developed the IBM PC didn't talk to the mainframe or mini computer division. If they had, the IBM PC would have been much different and much bigger. They do this in order to reduce the risk of committing to a failed product. Having a second product available should a line not work out is one of the reasons IBM is still around today. |

Yes, and they are using Linux on their supercomputers. On a second occasion, in 1985, after I had worked on UNIX computers designed by Scott McNealy, the former SUN boss, the interviewer said: UNIX? That is for students, not for us! Tullio |

Okay... so assuming my XP-ness doesn't send them into a fit of giggles... I will give it a go. No - easy peasy :) although I've only had cancer and aids tasks so far. VERY worthy causes of course but thinking of maybe temporarily deselecting them before next update request in the hope I'll get a chance to contribute to the ebola work too. |

I've read the Associate Press article on the Ebola project by World Community Grid (see the BOINC home page). BOINC is not even mentioned. Tullio |

Journalists are ignorant and you confirm this. Apparently it's you who is ignorant as WCG has their own version of boinc, so why would they mention it? A link to the article which you also neglected to post, here it is. And to quote: The free downloadable software, available at www.worldcommunitygrid.org, works on Windows or Mac computers and Android mobile devices, although not Apple Inc.'s iPhone or iPad. Litow said it's designed to only use idle capacity when a device is connected to the Internet. Otherwise it isn't in use, so it won't slow other functions. On mobile devices, the program only works when the device is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, to avoid draining batteries or running up wireless charges. Thanks Annie and Julie! Cool! :) Okay - so despite deselecting everything except ebola workunits, I have yet to receive one :( Now all that's left is to deselect accepting other tasks when they're out of ebola work... (which I don't really want to do) suppose its good news that there are a lot of people out there who want to help with it though :) |
