I have no idea how it is possible to separate so many of these police killings from race, and I find it offensive that someone would insist on doing so. The solution could be to move all discussion on Michael Brown and subsequent police murders of black men to the race thread. Reality Internet Personality |

The answer is very simple Es99, start your own thread, then you can rant and rave as much as you like about your "ist"s and "ism"s to your heart's content. ;-) Cheers. |

You've shown your true colours and I wasn't impressed. It is your thread, and I am happy to remove anything regarding race from it. That will include the murder of Michael Brown that has sparked protests on race all across the US including Berkeley. Reality Internet Personality |

You can copy anything you like from here for your own use Es99 and that's now enough discussion about "my thread rules" so if you can't add anything else here that's on topic then go somewhere else before I take action. ;-) Cheers. |

Ah, choke hold case. https://books.google.com/books?id=zz1rfrVz_OoC&lpg=PA30&ots=mPKrmQF8-d&dq=carotid%20compression%20hold&pg=PA30#v=onepage&q=carotid%20compression%20hold&f=false Now you have read up on it. and http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=76211&postid=1609513 LAPD Chief Daryl Gates also announced that his department was investigating whether carotid chokeholds were more likely to kill African-Americans for physiological reasons. As the chief explained in November 1982, "We may be finding that in some blacks when it [the hold] is applied, the veins and arteries do not open as fast as they do in normal people." I was trying to find if anyone had done a race based study on that point, but my search skills didn't find one. Because of sickle cell, I can't flat rule it out, but I doubt it until I see numbers. Now as to that cop, if department policy is do not use, it was used, internal discipline or fire. Second question is after the application, was policy followed in medical care of the person. Unless you can show "depraved indifference" there isn't a legal case, but there may be case for a internal discipline or fire. Just because the paramedics were across town shouldn't be a reason to convict the cop! Finally remember SCOTUS refused to rule the choke hold illegal. Like a Taser(r) any time you lay hands on another there is risk. Deaths happen in the boxing ring. This does bring up questions. Should choke holds be a police tool? Should police officers get EMT training to deal with the aftermath of the hold? |

A choke hold should never be used on anyone no matter what the cause IMO Gary. We also had 2 cases over here, I think that it may have been last year sometime, where a heap of cops piled onto people and suffocated them through chest cavity crushing. In both cases some cops were taken before the courts, others were given the boot, while the rest faced internal disciplinary actions. :-( Cheers. |

In the old days we called it scrogging a person, we don't do that any more. |

Ah, choke hold case. Gary you bring up a point about sickle cell. My grandson has it. Now this is only from what Ive seen happen to him. But when he his cold from being outside in winter. He goes into what the Dr's. Call a crisis. To stay warm the body starts shutting down the extremities to keep the heat in the core. But for those with sickle cell. The blood cells start clumping up at the resrtiction points. Ankels, Knees, Elbows and wrists. And it is very painfull. My Grandson ends up in the hosiptol on a morphene drip for 3 day to a week. Needlees to say he hates winter. But Im wondering if using a choke hold could precipatate an autoresponse in a sickle cell person?
Old James |

Rather obviously, if there is a correlation, then use of the hold must be treated the same as using a firearm by police. |

But people with sickle cell also have to stay hydrated and not over exert themselves. When I bicycle with my grandson, We take a canteen and stop often to cool off and drink water.I tell him its beacause im 45 years older than he is. But he knows its for his own good. I wonder if any studys have been done on that.
Old James |

A report to make one think? Just what would you do if it was pointed at you & you did not know what the weapon was? Very lucky to be alive |

I guess the politicians there are willing to spend a lot of $$$ on overtime and tie up the civilian population and commerce for hours. On this side of the pond, they aren't willing to spend so much, so he would have committed suicide by cop. |

Being a cop showed me just how racist and violent the police are. There’s only one fix. "Once, I accompanied an officer on a call. At one home, a teenage boy answered the door. That officer accused him of harboring a robbery suspect, and demanded that he let her inside. When he refused, the officer yanked him onto the porch by his throat and began punching him. Another officer met us and told the boy to stand. He replied that he couldn’t. So the officer slammed him against the house and cuffed him. When the boy again said he couldn’t walk, the officer grabbed him by his ankles and dragged him to the car. It turned out the boy had been on crutches when he answered the door, and couldn’t walk." Let's Play Good Cop, Bad Cop. All Ad Nauseam Like. A good cop wrote the article. So you need to correct your post to "The 99One Gives US Examples of Bad, Oh So Bad, Coppers and good, oh so good coppers." Otherwise I might think you are displaying "selective perceptions of reality". Reality Internet Personality |
