No sorry, thats blatantly false. For the longest time, the left used to represent the blue collar worker. And no disrespect to blue collar workers, but those generally do not have a university degree. Incidentally, the people the left used to represent are now all voting for the right.

Still, even now there are leftish populist groups that are clearly on the left but rely on mostly on gut feelings and stupidity to get their voters. It should come as no surprise that one of the most left wing parties, the Socialist Party, and one of the most right wing parties, the Freedom Party, go after the same target demographic and their manifestos have an aweful lot in common. Really, the only difference between them is that the right wing Freedom Party has injected their manifesto with tons of xenophobia and racism.

Nope, the Left-Right political cleavage has nothing to do with that. Its still about economics. Its just that left wing has a greater tendency to recognize things like racism and sexism because it does not believe fundamentally in the whole idea of personal responsibility, which is the philosophical basis on which Free Market Capitalism is founded. But in the end, being left wing does not mean you have to be compassionate human being who looks for real solutions rather than victim blaming.

Sorry, I know its off topic, but I just can't stand it when people start defining their favorite political field along lines that are just not true. To say that people on the left are on the whole, more decent human beings who are fundamentally more intelligent and better educated is needlessly divisive, polarizing and even dehumanizing.

Its just that left wing has a greater tendency to recognize things like racism and sexism because it does not believe fundamentally in the whole idea of personal responsibility, which is the philosophical basis on which Free Market Capitalism is founded. But in the end, being left wing does not mean you have to be compassionate human being who looks for real solutions rather than victim blaming.

Not quite. Also, it's definitely not just about economics. It's about choices peoples make, in economics also (but not only there!).
Take some time to educate yourself with latest neurophysiology works regarding left/right parties (democrats and republicans as USA's example of those).
And you will see, that left/right far from "only about economics", it's about whole life point of view, and it's statistically confirmed already in those works. [EDIT: in simple words BRAINS are different :) ]

It's much more about cooperation vs individualism as you could imagine. So initial comment about compassion (if not about education per se) is quite right.
