Absolutely pathetic. There are times when I am quite ashamed to live in the country that I do.
Mayhem
And what in the world is a "UK Fulfilment Centre" ??? It's just a posh name for a warehouse .....
Is this just a UK aberration or do other countries suffer the same madness?

Yes. My country has also started this madness.
I wonder what's happening...
Even today (saturday) is called Black Friday (not even translated to Swedish Svart Fredag).

That is if you translate it literary.

My last involvement with Black Friday found me at a mall (for a legitimate reason) walking past a long line of young hipsters waiting to get into an Apple store. I stopped, surveyed the scene, and announced "Sheep! Mindless sheep!" in a loud clear voice. They all avoided eye contact with me. My wife doesn't let me go to the mall on Black Fridays anymore.

Mine was all online. I got a few good deals on Monday, $161.90 with $18.00 shipping via USPS for $179.90 total for a used Asus X79 RIVE motherboard, originally the guy wanted $175.00 plus shipping, 20% off a can of whole powdered eggs for $20.42 instead of $24.28, that's all I got any real discounts on...

I dunno Vic, you do amaze me at times. Firstly, I can't understand why you persist in buying secondhand stuff from Ebay and paying top dollar for it. Wouldn't it make more sense to save up and buy new kit?

It is not healthy to live on powdered eggs or out of a tin. Why can't you buy fresh eggs and vegetables where you live? I'm sure that you could if you could be bothered to.

On the eggs, I've been preparing them for several years w/no ill effects, like 8 years in fact. I don't see anything wrong with buying frozen veggies, they are already chopped up and that's all that is done to them outside of freezing the bags contents.

Paying top dollar? Hardly, top dollar would have been closer to double or triple when new and I don't feel like waiting, I'd get criticized for buying new 'kit' and evidently I get almost the same for used...

A new X99 motherboard(about $500 for an Asus Rampage V Extreme),
would require all new DDR4 ram(16GB '2x8GB' 1866MHz Newegg $167.60, the ram isn't a factor since DDR3 is about the same in cost from what I've seen online), instead of DDR3,
a 5930k cpu($590-800 seen online, I don't like the 5820K since it has only 28 pcie lanes vs 40 lanes on the 5930K and up),
now I probably will buy some new GTX970 video cards(about $400 each) eventually, one at a time,
after I buy 2 more GTX580 cards(maybe $150-200 each) and 2 more GTX590 cards(about $200 each)...

You won't hear much of a complaint from me. It's your money. I for one would prefer new. But I understand limited funding.

I could spend more on food, if I had a place to store it at that is, I have trouble saving money, if it's within reach, it's tempting...

Sometimes the Zentraedi in Me comes out, but then I'm pretty heavy and tall, I'm 6'1" tall and weight about 375lbs, yeah I can shake the deck. I'll soon enough have My PC fixed as soon as I can get a larger case bought in January, My replacement motherboard is too large for the current cases that I own and the cooling requirements don't work with any case that I have either. So I've had to spend money on that, oh I could have a real problem, since I pay for some of My food and some of My bills online, the central gas heater has to wait until February...

I generally don't say anything about your purchases (anymore), but I have two things to say now. 1. If it were me, I'd get the heater fixed before buying computer hardware. 2. Did I understand you to say you're getting 580s now and then 970s later? Maybe it's just me, but I try not to buy cheap anything with a plan to replace it in the not too distant future. I prefer to just go for the better thing in the first place, and if I can't afford it, live without it until I can. (Half the time, I end up deciding I don't really need it anyway, and spend the money on something entirely unrelated to it.)

When it comes to hardware for crunching, I have finally realized that as competitive as I am about it, it's just not worth spending a lot of money on. True, my i7 does almost nothing but crunch, but I bought it with much higher aspirations that I was too lazy to follow through on (partially because I parked it in the basement and it's too uncomfortable for me to sit there for long periods of time, and I'd have to clear space for it to put it anywhere else in the house). My other computer has a 630 I bought on sale mainly because I wanted to stop CPU crunching on it.

Earlier this week, I saw a refurbished i5 laptop on tigerdirect.com for $250. I was really tempted, but I decided to sleep on it. The next day, it was $300. Today, their site didn't even find the item number. Oh well. I didn't really need a new laptop anyway. I already have five of them, only use two, and one of those (the one I'm on now) tends to overheat and shut off spontaneously.

(Anyway, I've been spending too much money on trains lately, which I can't operate because my club is gone. They tore down the building this week.)

Well lets see David, since you can't possibly know what is going on around here and I can't know what everyone else is up to, the park said they would fix My heater, just not when as the park has a money problem, which is why the park raised rents starting on Jan 1st by $15 a month, so that the park can attract people to work out here, My saying Feb is to give them time to do the repairs, it's a contingency, that's why the park stopped the transfer of this mobile home from Me to the park that was started under a previous owner in 2011, the delayed transfer was costing the park money in fines from the state of California, it was cheaper to stop the transfer, as part of the agreement, if and when I ever leave the park gets the mobile home, title and all, considering I can't put this place on its own land cause state law changed after I had bought the place in late 2006, it makes sense to Me and moving this place would be expensive and by experience I know all about that already, it was a $7000 cost to Me to tear down and move and setup this mobile home, to go from N. Las Vegas NV to Yermo CA and that required 3 different companies to do so with, plus I had to get permits and such, back then I had some money that I'd inherited, today I don't have that type of wherewithal anymore, if I did I'd be out of here in a heartbeat almost.

Now on the 580 vs 970 I have 4 motherboards and 4 cpus, one of those cpus is in a dying motherboard that I plan on replacing asap, so I'll have plenty of slots for both in 4 motherboards, I have My eye on an Asus Maximus III Extreme to put the soon to be orphan i5 750 cpu into, the phrase 'waste not, want not' comes to mind, I do know what I'm doing. After that last motherboard I won't be buying anymore motherboards or cpus for quite a while, I'll be moving on to other things and the 970 cards are mainly just speculation currently, I could always change My mind...

In Vic's case, frozen veggies make sense. As to eggs, the sell by date is for the store, not when they go bad.

As for black Friday, never participated in it. Not in cyberspace or a shop.
Now for after Christmas, not for a long time.
