I look forward to the new projects, and thanks for the updates. I just wish that a private company would send up real time telescopes for us us to sky watch, and report. Just saying

Maybe we should start a social media campaign and target corporate and people with enough money to be able to donate fund this research, or at the very least get you a license for free.. you'd think IBM could do at least that.

Just an idea, don't know how local govt works in the USA, but I worked for local govt for a while here in the UK, and they leased quite a bit of hardware, and it eventually became redundant due to newer kit being leased.

Thing is when we wanted to return some of the leased kit to the provider, they couldn't be bothered with it, since it wasn't the latest and greatest and it cost time and dosh to pick it up.

So it got given away. I ended up with an old server that I scrapped for parts..

So I'm wondering if the same sort of situation applies in the USA, when some govt dept or large corporation upgrades their kit, what happens to the replaced stuff? Does it get returned or sold off, or just scrapped?

Perhaps someone local to S@H could do a bit of sleuthing around and see what 'might' be available? Same thing might also apply to software..

Regards,
Cliff,

Regards,

We have something called surplus sales where you can get good bargains sometimes. The problem is the stuff can be sold in a lot so there may be a bunch of stuff you don't want or you may end up with 20 computers. Stuff coming out of schools while still usable may be on the old side. One of our rental units was using surplus hardware and when the company folded, I repurposed the hardware to a family with small children. There already was a computer there but it was needed for business and I provided a PC and a MAC that the kids could have their way with and not cause any harm to the business system.

I was thinking more of server type kit and software rather then workstation kit.

It may also be time to rope the media in to prick the corporate conscience regarding software etc.. But once again I have no idea how things work your side of the pond. Here one can chat up the BBC or one of their commercial rivals and now and then a story gets air time.

Regards,

Here's a couple of links to government surplus liquidations of mostly obsolete computer equipment:

http://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.AdvSearchResultsNew&searchPg=Category&additionalParams=true&sortOption=ad&timing=BySimple&timingType=&category=29
http://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/browse/cataucs?catid=1

Not exactly giveaways, though, but auctions. Sometimes single items, sometimes entire pallets of stuff, most of it not particularly useful anymore. I used to pay attention to these, but haven't in a long time.

Hi Jeff,
Its going to have to be someone with a little cash on your side of the pond to pick up on those links.

I'm a few thousand miles to far away to go to any US auctions.. And am somewhat short of the reddies:-(

Also anyone going to an auction would need to check with Matt as to what would be of use to S@H.
