My avatar is the seventh Doctor, played by Sylvester MoCoy. My previous one was a well-doctored real picture of myself. I'm pretty sure I don't have a profile at all. (I did throw one up at Beta because the low user count vastly increases the chances of being User of the Day.)

Thanks, Julie. It's a viola da gamba (bass viol, which is roughly comparable
to a cello). It was/is used with "Early"/Renaissance music (1400-mid-1700's).

Bass viols have, usually, 6 strings (same as a guitar, as you know). Mine,
however, has seven: D1, A1, E, C, G, D2, A2. Cellos have four strings,
but there are a few 5-string cellos, as well -- the two I've heard had
beautiful tone qualities.

I'm going to center this picture, by hook or by crook, eventually.

Good luck! We're rooting for you! :) I'd offer to give it a try for you. Very old Corel graphics suite (but its also very good) as long as your pic is jpg I could play around with it...? :) PM it to me if you're still struggling...

Mine's of an SU-54 that was here for the 2005 Airshow we had; he even did a 'nighttime' (early evening/dusk) show, where he had pyrotechnics firing from his wingtips & tail while in flight.

For the Setizens record, here, this will have to be my avatar (for now).
The 100x100 pixel constraint, by BOINC, can be met via the "Paint" program,
but the quality suffered. If the BOINC-allowed size had been 100x132, there
might have been an improvement. Alas, until then, . . .

I uploaded My avatar full size to Seti, Seti downscaled the pic just fine, looks as good as the bigger one...

zoom314 --

1) Was your picture's center = BOINC's?

2) I just loaded my 2.0MB picture (2736x3648 pixels), updated, and got the
same result.

Perhaps, I'm not doing that part of things correctly. Will have to
scratch my head, a bit more.

Thanks, for the info. It makes me think I'm overlooking something. . .

You need to do any centering yourself prior to uploading, that said, I just loaded mine as is, the pic looks good enough. You're welcome.

The picture of your car looks great, zoom314. Something to strive for. . .

That's what I thought, concerning centering. It appears that the BOINC software references the center of the provided 100x100 "window" from its top. It's then up to the submitter to match the picture's center to BOINC's center, via the top reference.

Bernie Vine managed, as well, with his pictures having great detail.
Perhaps, I'll need to play some camera games, to pull it off.

A future project to keep in mind.

Just about 100%, zoom314. Will let it go, at this.

The "Paint" program never really accomplished editing the picture
into a perfect square, and I didn't want to spend much more time
learning its eccentricities.

So, I edited it, using my Canon ZoomBrowser, and. . .voila'

[edit] Looks much more detailed now Jim. ;-)

My avatar pic was taken at a fundraisder for the Veterans' Group at the local Community College. We were at Buffalo Wild Wings and I had come straight from work. Quite a group - 6 Viet Nam-era vets plus wives/girlfriends, and a dozen youngsters (male and female) fresh out of service after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lots of fun.

My profile pic was taken several years ago at a "4 Chaplains of the Dorchester" service put on by the local AMVETS Post.

Thanks, for the good words, Wiggo.

When I 1st moved up here from Sydney, going from cable back to dailup, nearly killed us (figuratively speaking of course), or was driving us crazy (myself, the missus and 3 kids hitting that poor modem at the same time must of been torture, thankfully it was an external hardware job). Either way, it was good that we picked a small country village with a public school in it as 3yrs later we finally got ADSL.

These days a lot of sites seem to think that they need to be bandwidth hogs. :-(

Some people around this area still have to use dailup because they're in the wrong spot to get any other available type of signal. :-(

Cheers.

I've had dial-up, in the past, Wiggo. It's so-so.
Now, FIOS is available, and more satisfying, for speed.
