Has anyone used a PCI-E splitter for GPU crunching? Specifially something like:

Interesting, but far from cheap (but certainly cheaper than building another system)

Some folks do run extenders and single form swappers, but a four way splitter sounds a great way of putting a load of GPU onto that unused port.

I also noticed they do a mounting frame: http://amfeltec.com/products/gpu-oriented-cluster/

That product has been looked at by people in the past
PCI to PCIE Adaptor and Other Interesting Gizmos
Who uses PCIe extenders; do they work?
but I'm not sure that anyone has given it a go yet.
Using the PCIe x4 splitter it would effectively run the cards with 1 lane each. The same as the PCIe x1 to x 16 adapter cables really. Which may be a cheaper option if you have a MB with several x1 slots. Why no one makes a splitter to take a single PCIe x16 slot to 4 PCIe x4 slots is beyond me.
At the moment I have an interest in the PCIe x1 to x16 adapters like this

I have 3 of those exact x1 to x16 riser cards coming in the mail already. I will let you know how it goes!
