Yes, I know about the current issues re the upload server, and the fact it's maint day, but the pop-up from Boinc Manager, telling me it can't access the internet is totally bugging me, as whan I check, internet access is fine, thank you very much ;-)

So, my query is, HOW does BM determine internet access isn't there?

This sounds like a misleading message - could you say which version of BOINC you're using, and the exact wording you're receiving? If you could correlate the message pop-up with whatever BOINC is trying to do at the time - from the Event Log - that would be helpful.

To answer your specific question: if BOINC fails to get a response from the expected project web address, it tries a test connection to a high-availability public website. By default, it tests "A Well-Known Search Engine", aka google.com

If there's no reply from Google, then it assumes the whole internet is unavailable from your location.

|The full messaqe, as per the event log is, and I quote,

"Boinc can't access the Internet - cdheck network connection or proxy configuration" Using 7.2.42. Internet access is always fine, as soon as I see the popup, I fire up Firefox and it loads Google as my default home page.
Usually BM is trying to upload/report when it happens. If I tell BM to upload the current crop of waiting WU's, even knowing the upload server is "down", BM will eventually report no internet access.

It's no big deal, I was just wondering how it determined wether access was available. I do use UK Google, so maybe google.com is unavailable, though I have tried it and it seems ok ;-)

If your taking about tray pop up...
Advance view -> Tools -> Options -> General Tab -> Notice reminder interval -> select how often you want notice

I set mine to once a day so I don't miss project notices.

Mine is already at 6hrs, but the popup occurs as the problem occurs ;-)

Message 1596958 - Posted: 4 Nov 2014, 14:18:34 UTC - in response to Message 1596952.

I've just looked at one of mine, and I'm getting

04/11/2014 14:07:52 | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
04/11/2014 14:07:54 | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

- which would be more normal. I think you should only get the balloon pop-up if the second of those two tests fails.

If you consistently get a false internet connection report, there are a couple of settings you could try.

<network_test_url>URL</network_test_url>
The URL to use when checking network connectivity; default is http://www.google.com/.

You could try putting http://www.google.co.uk in there, if you don't want to be bothered by transatlantic link failures. Or

<dont_contact_ref_site>0|1</dont_contact_ref_site>
To determine if a physical network connection exists, the client occasionally contacts a highly-available web site (google.com). If this flag is set, this behavior is suppressed.

Thanks Richard, I'll try one of those switches later.

Thank goodness for that. I've been getting that quite regularly since late June. The last was at 16:32:34 yesterday.

Thought that it was a problem on my rig so did a repair with no joy. Run out cache & uninstalled boinc, cleaned up system & reinstalled. Still getting that notice.

I'm using 7.2.42.

Im getting that same message on all 3 of my computers also. Im running 7.2.42. I figure If I can pull up the server page and or the message boards and connect to a local news feed, To me it just means a server at Seti is borked. But yes those messages do tend to strike fear im my heart:)
