NOT true, Sirius! The new units that hookup to main house power now come with a battery backup. So, should there be a power failure, it will use the battery. However; as batteries die just sitting around, our upstairs smoke alarm kept beeping, and talking, telling us that the battery was low.

Nice to know. However, the 3 I have here in the house have no batteries (thank god & if they did, I'd pull them).

It was the #£$%&*@^$'ing battery in the ceiling smoke alarm, warning it was almost flat!!! Exactly the same volume and tone to a UPS beep, and less than 10 feet from said UPS. A simple coincidence, but I'm feeling a complete idiot and have wasted 2 hours time messing about :-(
But, if you can't laugh at yourself for being a total berk, it's a sad world.

I completely commiserate. I get discombobulated about stuff with increasing frequency as the months and years go on...

That said, I don't have to worry much about the power at my mom's house. She has a whole-house generator that kicks in automatically if the electricity goes below a certain threshold, and it's seamless. Nothing misses a beat. Of course, it runs on natural gas, so if there's an earthquake, then that might cause a problem, but basically she's in good shape.

It's even worse when you have to drive 15 miles across town just to identify the beep...

I got a call once (before I retired...): the client's brand new Windows NT server was making a loud noise, could I come and quieten it down? Drove down, and realised that the 'noise' sounded like a meaningful sort of beep signal. Read through the F. manual, and found the decode page: main CPU cooling fan failure alarm. Beeps like that are meant to be annoying, so you go and track them down in the sound-proof closet that servers are often hidden away in. This one was in his office, and had been beeping for two days.....

It was a crap brand-name server too (a branding usually applied to laptop computers), which he'd got on the cheap from one of his other suppliers. But at least it came with on-site warranty, so I left the fix to them.

So the electric short starts the fire, finally the breaker trips and the smoke alarms stay silent and you snooze to a smokey end.

Three years ago when I was buying the house, I looked at many with fire alarm issues. After buying the one I have now, I had to put up with fire 6 alarms because it has 9 foot ceilings and the alarms run off the power line with a 9 volt battery for backup. The house was built in 2007 and had the power off for about a year killing off all the alarm batteries. First purchase was a ladder and a hand full of 9 volt batteries to shut the things up. On the other hand, they are all wired together so if one detects a problem, they all go off.

Can't sleep so have filled out a London transport lost property claim form for one shoe and a sock instead. Stupid? Maybe. But WAS quite fond of them when they were both part of a pair...

Put my left leg inside a Northern line underground train during rush-hour on Friday but left the rest of myself on the platform. Was too polite getting on I think. :/ Allowed myself to get swamped by people pushing past. Looking back on it... I should have done the same or retracted my leg. Did neither... just fleetingly thought "uh-oh beeping doors" followed by a one-legged cancan inside the train... and an other-legged kangaroo hop on the outside. Presume driver thought the jam was caused by someone who was - by and large - mostly inside - and that they would somehow rescue their bag or whatnot because he didn't open the doors. I'd like to think he would have done eventually... you know... before pulling out of the station and having me sweep a metre wide strip of platform clean of fellow commuters with my dangling bits, because two people inside and two outside were unable to get the doors apart. Fortunately three other gentlemen inside had the wits to grab my leg at the knee and ankle and push whilst another on the outside yanked on my thigh. Not usually keen on so much familiarity from strangers... nor being the centre of so much attention but I was touched literally AND figuratively :) I do have hopes of being reunited with my shoe - one day :) ... my sock less so :( Last time I saw it, it was dangling forlornly from the train doors and heading towards London Bridge.

Oh... and I don't think London has enough people walking around with one shoe on to be honest. Mohican's - chains hanging from noses - halloween costumes... no one bats an eyelid. One bare foot... WIDE berth. Reverted to my African annie in the end - 100% bare foot perambulation. Very liberating :) AND reduced the risk of moving in mysterious, anti-clockwise circles or listing into traffic.

@Chris - *enagage chortle repression mode* my commiserations on your beep mix-up *catastrophic failure of repression mode* :)))))))) Y-e-e-e-s... Fire alarms and I don't get on - I believe I have posted on the issue before - beeping computers? Sorry... means nothing to me... they usually communicate they have issues with me via *ffFTZSTZZZss's* sparks and smoke signals. I tend to accept their word on the matter as final.

I'm glad that you are OK Annie but your adventures crack me up something shocking.

Annie, there are three points.
1. You have seen the last of your shoe.
2. Your report may still be useful because the engineer overrode a safety device when it was warning of a dangerous condition.
3. Any machine deserves caution when you are around it. Something as simple as a knife can cause harm. Something with thousands of volts and thousands of horsepower can cause some real damage. When I am at the yard, I am constantly looking all over the place because you never know when you will bump into a truck driver hopped up on Red Bull.

The so called tight space is a doorway about 5'8" high, four inches less than my height :-(
