Message 1596519 - Posted: 3 Nov 2014, 17:39:28 UTC - in response to Message 1596273.

However, my other host (the 630) has now finished two tasks with the new settings and it's a major improvement in the run time. I hope the 440 ends up showing the same improvement.

Well, looking at it while more awake, it's a major improvement in CPU time, but not total run time. Still, minimal CPU use is important to me on that box.

try -cpu_lock instead of -use_sleep or together with it.

Message 1597018 - Posted: 5 Nov 2014, 4:04:04 UTC - in response to Message 1595944.

My first task reported since I added the switches came back with an error.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=3808622132

Something is completly wrong here.

Run time over 1 day.

Do you have one CPU core free ?

Did you exclude the seti data folder from your anti virus proggy ?

It seems your GPU got in a stall.

It happened again, without the other app tying up the GPU. I have killed the .txt file and restarted Boinc Manager. If it happens a third time, I'll try restarting the computer.

I'm not sure how, but the dozen other GPU AP7s I had all timed out early, only four or five days old. I don't know if this was done by Boinc Manager, the server, or maybe it's a result of me disabling the txt file with the switches in it. Anyway, right now I only have AP7s assigned to my CPU.

How do you "disable the txt file"?

Do you delete the file (WRONG) or do you delete the contents (OK) so the file is empty?

You can't change the file name or delete the file. BOINC treats the .txt files much the same as the .exe or .dll files. If one is missing it dumps all of the work assigned to that app. Also I have found it removes the other files associated with in the <app> section of the app_info.xml as well.

Oh great. Am I going to have to reinstall Lunatics?

I guess that would be why it canceled all the others it had.

If you look in your project folder & find the .exe is gone. Then yes afraid so.

I just had that happen to me earlier this evening. I wanted to test Raistmer's r2742 beta AP app containing the "zombie" tasks fix, so I copied the files and updated the app_info.xml. Since I was also planning to try out the new per-GPU config file, I thought I was being smart to add "AstroPulse_NV_config.xml" entries to app_info (which Raistmer had pointed out in another thread was a requirement). Unfortunately, I hadn't actually created that file yet before I restarted BOINC. Yep, the only 2 APs that I had in the queue got immediately dumped because that file was missing. When I checked the S@H folder, I discovered the r2742 .exe had vanished, too! Fortunately, both AP tasks were returned as "lost" ones once I fixed the problem and I was able to go ahead with my original plan.

Sigh. Okay. While I'm at it, should I upgrade to .43a, or doesn't it offer any benefit for my hardware?

v0.43a contains the latest AP v7 released GPU apps. So it couldn't hurt to use them.

Argh. I may have another problem, but I'm not sure.

I downloaded .43a and installed it. Going from memory and what files were in the project folder, I chose the SSE2 apps on the first page of the installer. Then I edited app_info.xml to change all the counts to .5. Then I started Boinc again. Here's the event log:

Argh. Yup, looks like a problem - in which case, it'll be in the original 0.43 release too, I didn't change the CPU apps for the 'a' revision.

Too late to work on it tonight - I'll look again first thing in the morning.

But why do you choose SSE2 for this CPU - it have SSE3 (= pni) (else how do you think it may have the next SSSE3 ?)

I need to check who chose SSE2 - was that David, or the installer's CPU detection? (which shouldn't be confused by the PNI report - it doesn't use BOINC's detection string). My i5 (gen 2) pre-selects SSE4.2 - I'd expect the same for an i7 (unless it has AVX).

Another one for the morning.

From his post:
"I chose the SSE2 apps on the first page of the installer"

My i5 (gen 2) pre-selects SSE4.2 - I'd expect the same for an i7 (unless it has AVX)

He talks about AstroPulse (for which I think only SSE2 and SSE3 variants are in the installer)
(but he maybe also "chose the SSE2 apps" for MultiBeam?)

I need to check who chose SSE2 - was that David, or the installer's CPU detection?

From his post:
"I chose the SSE2 apps on the first page of the installer"

My i5 (gen 2) pre-selects SSE4.2 - I'd expect the same for an i7 (unless it has AVX)

He talks about AstroPulse (for which I think only SSE2 and SSE3 variants are in the installer)
(but he maybe also "chose the SSE2 apps" for MultiBeam?)

I chose SSE2 for both because, as far as I could tell, that was what I chose before. If it's wrong, I'll go back and do SSE3. How do I know what I should use?

The installer would've had the correct version already selected for that app before you changed it. ;-)

Cheers.
