a fluke that is unlikely to have been repeated anywhere else in the universe

Even if there is only one truly Earth-like planet in each galaxy there would therefore be 100 billion such planets in the Universe. So what were the odds of all the happy accidents that started life here. I figure since life tries perhaps 100,000 species or more here on Earth that it may not be all that improbable --given the large number of fertile venues.

I do not think that we will ever know --but lets keep looking anyway.

Weeeeell they are searching for these God particles. We don't know if we are alone or not in the Universe and we probably will never know. As for the LHC it is costing a lot of money and not advancing the human race much that I can see so far. Just more fancy particles with more fancy names. But then I'm only an ordinary person, not a scientist, so what do I know.

Somebody somewhere is happy to fund it all, probably the same one that wants to go to the asteroids.

I often wonder where the research at CERN and the other particle accelerator sites will lead and what practical applications the research will end up with. Hopefully not a better way to kill one's enemies, which is why such research in the past was funded by governments.

Particles accelerators are used to treat tumors that are not cured by surgery. There is a hadron therapy accelerator in Pavia and my daughter was writing software for it in her thesis. Then a minister did not give any money to the University of Milano and she had to find employment in a software house. But I have published articles in the Seventies on the Mondadori Yearbook which described this use of accelerators, and I was happy to see my daughter working on it.

Also, the X-rays produced by the Elettra Synchrotron Light Source in Trieste, built by Carlo Rubbia, are used for diagnosis of breast cancer in women.

CERN has built a number of particle accelerators of greater energy, learning from every step. The head of the Italian project of a hadron accelerator for cancer therapy is Ugo Amaldi, son of Edoardo Amaldi, one of the founders of CERN. Basic research often gives results used in medical therapy and also industry. One example is Computerized Tomography, which uses software developed by astronomers to get images of celestial radio sources. In turn, they used an algorithm developed by a Russian mathematician with no application in mind. Another example is Magnetic Resonance scans (I took two of them recently).
Also, the transistor which we use every day, derives from basic research in solid state physics. So, it would be a mistake to stop basic research and the Americans regret the decision to abandon the Super Conducting Super Collider, which was to be built in Texas.
Year 2015 has been proclaimed the Year of Light by the United Nations General Assembly. I've read on "Nature" magazine of advances made to use common light to explore biological materials, such as living tissue. This would decrease the danger of using X-rays and strong magnetic fields such as CT and NMR, which recently broke my remaining teeth in the upper part of the mouth. So long live basic science!

Yes Tullio, I do understand that the smaller particle accelerators have produced very good results and advanced medical science in treatment of cancers. But we have been talking about the LHC which as I understand it was designed to answer questions about the origin and make up of the universe. Perhaps if they used it to get bigger and better cancer cures first, and then as a by product investigated exotic particles???

Stephen Hawking predicts that a 'nuclear war' will destroy humankind.

A major nuclear war would be the end of civilization, and maybe the end of the human race.

[edit] I predict that too, but who am I...

We had this danger at the time of the Cuba crisis in 1961. But Kennedy and Kruscev avoided it, with the help of Pope Giovanni XXIII.

Stephen Hawking isn't the only prominent Scientist that has predicted our demise through the use of nuclear weapons. But the genie is out of the bottle and I doubt that it can ever be stuffed back in. I doubt that the major powers will ever make use of nuclear weapons on each other but I do fear that some small terrorist group will get their hands on a device or that a couple of small countries that really hate each other will resort to using atom bombs.

I think we are more in danger from global warming that from nuclear weapons. But the real danger is if a terrorist group gets its hand on an atomic warhead. I've read that Americans are afraid that some nuclear warheads in an Italian air base aren't watched properly.

He does talk about a nuclear war, we don't know if he means destruction by means of atom bombs or rather a war in the science of quantumfyzix. What I think is the latter, obviously:)

Quantum physics cannot harm anyone. It is not a weapon of mass destruction, it is only difficult to understand. But perhaps it manages our minds, as Roger Penrose thinks, and I tend to agree with him.

Uranium, plutonium etc.. All elements that occur in the periodic table of Mendelejev

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapon_design

There's a lot of money involved in the field of quantumfyzix and a lot of mad scientists play a role in it. It's only a matter of time before the wrong people will start playing with the wrong elements...

Quantum physics has nothing to do with nuclear weapons. The basic principles of nuclear weapons were established by the scientists of the Manhattan project and haven't changed. Then Edward Teller and Stan Ulam on one side of the Iron Curtain, Andrej Saharov and others on the other side developed the hydrogen bomb.Read the book "Disturbing the Universe" by Freeman J. Dyson for an overview of this story. Dyson tells the story of a student who gained enough information in the building a nuclear weapon from free sources without breaking any law. There is no secret in it, you must only enrich uranium or produce plutonium in a nuclear reactor. This is just engineering.

If there were no uranium, nor plutonium, there wouldn't be any possibility to create a nuclear bomb. The science of quantumfyzix lies at the bassics of this weapon of mass destruction. If the wrong people achieve the necessary power over this area of science, all is lost. Again Tullio, I understand what you write but I have such a nasty feeling over it all:(

Totally different subject that could correlate with the above is something called the New World Order, getting right in the middle of it, not much I can do but knowing Is security for me.

Uranium exists in nature. It is a mixture of three isotopes, U238,U235 and U233. Only U235 is fissile, the others two are fertile. Plutonium is created artificially in nuclear reactors or Cyclotrons. But all this is an old story,

Nuclear fission! That is where a clean future lies, that's what's happening inside our Sun! If only people were brave enough to put more money in ideas like that, although not accomplishable (?) within our current state of evolution..
