If they stick to the principals that less government is better then we all win. But... well anything more belongs somewhere else. So I will stay with we all win. But I am winning for the moment.

The country is going to hell in a hand basket. I am nauseated by the election returns.

Me too Angela, Me too, I'm full of doom and I'm feeling pretty gloomy, believe Me I know why too, do I ever. But I can't post what I post on Facebook here.

It's even worse for me. We just (apparently) elected a Republican governor who is likely (despite what he claimed in the campaign) to decimate education, public employee unions, and public employee pensions, all of which affect me directly. And also state-supported Amtrak service, which interests me greatly.

But this is not the politics forum, so I will leave it here.

Carlos I agree that it is unfair to lump all conservatives in with the socially conservative groups that have co-oped that political party, but I throw my lot in on the blue side precisely BECAUSE I think that the principle of less government is a very bad one. Go ahead and call me a "tax and spend liberal", as I would wear that mantle proudly. In my view, the purpose of government is to redistribute wealth and in a democracy that tends to require government intervention.

People do not always have to vote in their own self interest. For example, I happen to have come from a resourced family. I would benefit from having inheritance tax rates set very low or even eliminated, yet I consistently vote for the side that does not want that because I think that inheritances should be taxed through the roof. It is a relatively painless way to redistribute wealth.

On the flip side, I genuinely struggle with the concept of abortion, but not for religious reasons. In the course of my career as a speech and language pathologist I have worked with children who were born so prematurely that, had they been born a mere twenty five years ago, they probably would not have lived. In addition I have worked with children, born full term, who are not quite as smart as the cats in my home. The philosophical questions of "what constitutes human life" and "when does human life begin" are exactly that - philosophical. Given my struggles with these two questions, you might think that I would throw my lot in with the side that wishes to eliminate abortion rights. I do not, because I am not a single issue voter.
