Ebola: New vaccine trial begins

Scientists at Oxford University have begun immunising healthy volunteers with a new Ebola vaccine.

In September last year a separate trial of another Ebola vaccine got under way in the city.

This latest trial involves 72 volunteers aged 18-50.

Initial tests in monkeys showed the vaccine, developed by Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson and Johnson, gave complete protection against Ebola.

The volunteers in Oxford are the first humans to receive the vaccine.

Assuming they later Infected the Vaccinated monkeys:

Do they now infect the Vaccinated Humans?

Or wait to see if 72 People are 'naturally' infected?

Could be a long wait.

That could raise some moral questions about infecting a deadly disease in a human. One would hope that they are going to Africa and do volunteer works with infected peoples.
And just because it works in monkeys sure dosent mean it works in humans.

Ebola outbreak: Quarantine 'just like a jail' in Sierra Leone

For 18 days, Alieru Deen Bangura’s family has been quarantined in a slum in Sierra Leone's capital of Freetown.

As part of the West African city's efforts to stem the spread of the deadly Ebola virus, the family lives under the watchful eye of armed guards 24 hours a day.

Ebola outbreak: final vaccine trials to start this month or next, WHO says

Final-stage trials of experimental Ebola vaccines will begin in January or February in the worst-hit West African countries as scientists and drugmakers race to block the deadly disease, the World Health Organization said on Thursday.

If effective, the shots will be available for deployment a few months later.

Bridal shop closes after being stigmatized by Ebola

AKRON, Ohio — Operators of a northeast Ohio bridal shop linked to an Ebola survivor say the store is closing because it lost significant business and has been stigmatized.

Dallas nurse Amber Vinson was diagnosed with Ebola days after visiting Coming Attractions Bridal & Formal store in Akron in October. The store temporarily closed and cleaned before reopening in November, but business hasn’t bounced back.

Education has limited value, in situations as this.

Dallas hospital also has a stigma for patients.

Ebola nurse Pauline Cafferkey 'critical for some time'

A British nurse who was diagnosed with Ebola after returning from Sierra Leone could remain in a critical condition for "some time", her family have said.

Pauline Cafferkey's family also thanked the public for their support and hospital staff for their kindness.

The nurse from Glasgow is being treated at London's Royal Free Hospital.

Ms Cafferkey was diagnosed with Ebola in December having volunteered with other UK NHS staff for the charity Save the Children in West Africa.

Vaccines move to Ebola frontline

Two promising Ebola vaccines will soon be tried on the frontline of the epidemic in West Africa, the World Health Organization has announced.

Trials in limited numbers of volunteers suggest the vaccines are safe and can generate an immune response.

Further trials on thousands of people will take place in Africa, including in healthcare workers.

It is still unclear how much protection against Ebola, or for how long, the vaccines might provide.

The two leading candidates - being produced by GlaxoSmithKline and Merck - are going through safety trials in the US, UK and other countries.

Ebola virus continues to fuel Sierra Leone's economic freefall

Kadiatu Sesay sprinkles the chili peppers and tomatoes on her vegetable stand in Krootown market with cool water. It helps keep them fresh looking and appetizing while she waits for customers.

1st Ebola Clinic For Pregnant Women Opens In Sierra Leone

A new clinic is giving some of the most vulnerable Ebola patients a better chance at surviving the virus.

The facility -- located in a former boys' high school in the capital city of Freetown -- is the first care center created specifically for pregnant women since the current outbreak began, Reuters reported.

New Ebola cases slump in all three worst-hit countries: WHO

(Reuters) - All three countries hit hardest by the Ebola epidemic have recorded their lowest weekly number of new cases for months, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday, as the global death toll reached 8,429 out of 21,296 cases reported so far.

Sierra Leone and Guinea both saw the lowest weekly total of confirmed Ebola cases since August 2014. Liberia, which reported two days with zero new cases last week, had its lowest weekly total since June, the WHO said.

The worst-hit countries by Ebola will soon have their first-hand trial of two of the Ebola vaccines early this year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
