Some hope?

Ebola crisis now 'stable' in Guinea, WHO says

The Ebola outbreak is now "stable" in Guinea, where the latest crisis began, the World Health Organization says.

There were still some flare ups in the south-east, but things were improving in other prefectures, WHO co-ordinator Dr Guenael Rodier told the BBC.

More than 5,400 people have died in the latest outbreak, with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia the worst hit.

The outbreak can be ended by mid-2015 if the world speeds up its response, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said.

BAMAKO, Mali — Mali on Saturday confirmed a new case of Ebola and said two more suspected patients are being tested, raising concern about a further spread of the disease, which has already killed at least five people in the country. The patient who tested positive "was placed in an isolation center for intensive treatment," said a government statement distributed Saturday. No details about the patient were provided.

Number of Ebola cases nears 16,000 as Sierra Leone loses ground: WHO

(Reuters) - The death toll in the world's worst Ebola epidemic has risen to 5,689 out of 15,935 cases reported in eight countries by the end of Nov. 23, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.

Almost all cases and all but 15 deaths have been in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia - the three hardest-hit countries, which reported 600 new cases in the past week, the WHO said in its latest update.

UN: More Than 16,000 People Sickened With Ebola

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Sierra Leone will soon see a dramatic increase in desperately needed Ebola treatment beds, but it's still not clear who will staff them, according to the top United Nations official in the fight against the disease.

Ebola has sickened more than 16,000 people of whom nearly 7,000 have died, according to figures released by the World Health Organization Friday.

Health Highlights: Dec. 1, 2014

WHO Misses Dec. 1 Ebola Targets

The World Health Organization will fall short of its Dec. 1 targets to control the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

By that date, the agency wanted to have a patient isolation rate of 70 percent and to have safe burials of 70 percent of victims in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the three hardest-hit countries, the Associated Press reported.

However, those targets will be achieved only in Guinea. In Liberia, only 23 percent of Ebola patients are isolated and only 26 percent of required burial teams are operational. In Sierra Leone, the rates are 40 percent and 27 percent, respectively.

Ebola back in Atlanta?

American possibly exposed to Ebola being transferred to Atlanta hospital

(Reuters) - A U.S. healthcare worker who had been in West Africa and may have been exposed to the Ebola virus is being transferred to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, a hospital spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The patient will be monitored and observed for signs of infection. The hospital said it did not have a time of arrival and was unable to share more details "out of respect for patient privacy and in accordance with the patient's wishes." It did not say where the patient is currently located or when he or she returned to the United States.

Super-flu outbreak fears as CDC warns new shots may not protect against mutated virus sweeping America

As flu season begins to ramp up, health experts say the vaccine does not protect well against the current strain sweeping across America.

The variant - influenza A (H3N2) - has been linked to higher rates of hospitalization and death, especially in the elderly.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials say the shot should still provide some protection, but it would be better if the vaccine strain was an exact match to the mutation.
