When I was young, TV was something that was lacking. We had only one black and white TV and with a younger brother and sister, I was outvoted by them and overridden by my parents. I didn't see Star Trek until it was in it's second or third round of reruns and I lived by myself. Most of my time was spent reading or working with electronic projects/ideas.

One special thing from my childhood was Wallace and Ladmo. You wouldn't know anything about it if you didn't live in the Phoenix Arizona area, but most of the population in Arizona from that time knew about it and watched it. The show targeted children and adults with the ability to outrank the ratings of the major networks. I think many people missed something great because the show never went national.

I have to be very careful in commenting on that show. My wife's middle name is Frances.

50 years ago the fireplace was always considered the focal point in a room, and furniture was arranged to face it. But you couldn't move a fireplace! Modern flats and houses these days tend not to have fireplaces any more, so the TV has become the focal point, which is easier to move.

My dad did!!! We tore down the fireplace from the Southeast corner and built a new one on the East wall during our 1996 remodel. To me, that's moving a fireplace. ;-) :-)

Sometimes the chimney breast that the fireplace is in, is classed as a structural wall, so all you can do is to block it off with an air brick left in for ventilation. A lot of people then put a wall mounted electric fire there. Sort of rather defeats the object of blocking it off in the first place really, but we also did it!

Well, since in a lot of places wood fires are illegal due to pollution something gives ....

They put acid on music?
Nawwwww...... next your gonna say some of them people were
taking acid while they played their songs. How do they do
that with out burning their lips?
Julie, some people in here grew up on Acid Rock.
Not me of course, but I don't think others will mind.
Some might even get all Déjà vu on us.
Have at it Pal!

Acid is the name of the music, like Goa and Trance, Seppe liked Ambient very much. General name would be Techno music I think.

I watched the funeral of King George VI and the Coronation in 1953 on a neighbours b/w set. We got our first tv in 1956, a 19" b/w 405 line one. 625 line colour came in 1967. And yes I prefer the 4:3 aspect ratio sets to the 16:9 ones of today, but to be fair they are more true to life as you have better peripheral vision left to right than you have up and down. My new 40" flat-screen is so slim you can hang it on the wall like a picture, that is the only advantage that I can see, a 40" CRT set would need scaffolding!!

I see what you're saying about the peripheral vision, but a living room isn't a movie theatre(though some people try to make it that way nowadays). As much as I truly love tv, I don't want it to be the focal point of the room. That was one of the nice things about the old console TV's because they blended in as pieces of furniture.

Focal point of the room? You can hide a flat screen TV completely if you want.
Some would that the new TVs blend in better because they're not pieces of furniture.

And you can use new TVs to show Pictures, like a painting or some other nice pics.
Or why not, a fireplace with both moving pictures and sound:)

That's true; I hadn't thought about that... But I'm sentimental for the old console tv style. My mom still has her console stereo, too. :~)

Back then we had stereograms that were the size of a small sideboard. These days you'd get better sound out of a Walkman!

Well, these might help:

Cool! Genuine or modern retro?

I don't know how or where to classify them, but they look like something that came out of H.G. Wells' steamer trunk. :~)
