Message 1589578 - Posted: 21 Oct 2014, 5:07:31 UTC

Joined back in Dec 2003, now I'm back, Don't remember these work units running this long. Estimate was 9 hours, Latest one took 18+ hours to complete. Thought my computer would run these faster.

Hope someone can look at this log and give me some pointers. Thanks.

I can't be sure but I think it has to do with the fact that seti downloaded a bunch of Vlars to your computer. Those tend to run alot longer than normal work units. I found this on an older thread.

There is a class of WUs which NVIDIA GPUs find very, very hard to deal with - so much so, that the project will never send them to an NVIDIA card: there were too many complaints that it became almost impossible to use the computer for normal day-to-day activities while these tasks were processing.

These tasks are the so-called VLARs (marked as such in the task name): it stands for 'Very Low Angle Range'. That comes about because they are recorded when the Arecibo telescope is looking at a single point in the sky for an extended period. Arguably, if that point source is a star with planets, the extended recordings might be the best bet for achieving success in the project's search for ET. So yes, please run VLARs, and for that, you need to enable crunching on your CPUs.

So I'm thinking (and I'm sure someone will point it out if I'm wrong) that might be why it is taking so long to crunch on your CPU

Edit..

Here is a sample sample of your event log

Your CPU is tooooo slow. Even for non vlar tasks.
Also does not support Hyper-Threading.

Don’t forget that windows and other programs need your Cpu power.

Low powered CPU. This a little "embedded" processor that uses 5.5w of power, max.

It's actual efficiency isn't too bad, even if it takes most of a day to do a vlar, it didn't use much power doing it.

But you can't expect it to compare with a full spec Core2 or I series CPU that might be using 50+ watts.

It's not that it's tooo slow, it's just slow.

That surprizes me, my older xp w/ 2 GB computer years ago ran these, it wasn't a fast computer.

My current laptop is acer, Intel Core 2 solo 1.4 Ghz 800 Mhz w/ 4 GB should at least run faster than the old one. The fan just idles, doesn't appear to be working hard at all.

The last non vlar wu ran in about 9 hours.

Begining to wonder if the power consumed is worth being part of the collective.

It's very likely that your old PC was faster to what you have now even if it was just a mid-range unit and I bet that that old PC used a hell of a lot more power as well. ;-)

Cheers.

Your Core2 Solo 1.4 GHZ. really ought to outperform my Pentium-M 1.4 GHz.. There's a few years of general improvement, 3 times as much cache, etc. Mine does a vlar in about 9 hours if I'm asleep and not doing other things with the computer. That's with an optimized 32 bit build, with the stock build you're using it would take between 11 and 12 hours.

It's hard to guess what may have slowed your processing. CPU tasks are run at the lowest priority, so almost any other program or service gets what time it wants and the crunching gets what's left. Task Manager can show you if something else is taking a significant amount of CPU time. Another thing I noticed is that the CPU time was nearly 6 hours less than the run time, I get that kind of difference only when I'm actively using my computer.

How many "years ago"?
It was probably in 2007 or 2008 on "mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP2200+":

There were IIRC at least 2 changes that involve "bigger search"
- the SETI@home Enhanced (v6) WUs changed to do 'more sensitive' search by a factor of two
- SETI@home v7 adds Autocorrelation search
'Autocorr count: 1' on your task:
