Message 1589309 - Posted: 20 Oct 2014, 16:00:47 UTC

I have one intake fan that I can pin to the MB but the cable/wire won't reach plus there are two different wires coming out of the fan and I don't get it. One is a three pin female the other is a two pin male. Which one do I use and can I just buy a simple extension. On the MB it's a three pin male so I assume I use the three pin female and just get an extension somewhere. But what is another two pin male coming off the fan for?

My new rig is all hooked up and is running seti nicely. I will get my 280X in a week or so. It's in the mail.

Thanks everybody for all the help you have given me. Hope we have a great year.

You can buy an extender from either NewEgg or off amazon. Yes, use the 3 Pin Female. I think that 2 pin male is in case you wanted to connect to another smaller fan but I can't be sure without know the make and model of the fan. I have be extenders and sometimes y splitters (as I have to many fans and not enough fan power supply pins on my MoBo.

Thanks Zalster,
I'll just go with the 3 pin and forget about the other complications. :-)
I don't need anything split right now. Oh, I guess you mean like chain
a few fans together for one MB pin?

Just bought the 3 pin 18" extension at amazon.

I used a couple of four pin molex adapters on my build. They come in handy when you want extra fans.

You can get adaptors like this and run extra fans off a spare drive connector. You wont have speed feedback or monitoring, it just puts 12V on the fan and lets it go.

The Motherboard fan headers have a max rating that may not be very high, so it's possible to overload them with a couple of bigger fans. A molex plug is good for a couple of amps at least, and a modern PC probably isn't using them anyway.

Most power supplies have all kinds of unused connections in their output cables in a variety of voltages. Generally, yellow wires are +12 volts and red wires are +5 volts - and black is ground. Use a voltmeter if you aren't sure.

I don't have any colored wires only black and I was told the power wire had a triangle on it.

Voltmeter? Well I looked on amazon and they are cheap enough but if I get one I'll have to learn how to use it properly without killing myself or my dog or frying my MB. You know my name, right? Well it took some time for me to acquire that name. I like it and I have to try and do right by it; but thanks for trying to help. :-)

Thanks John,
I really appreciate that info. Yesterday I was just in a clowning around kind of mood.
