One report is interesting, the 2nd highly debatable!

As the first country in the world Uruguay has legalized the cultivation, sale and smoking of cannabis. The idea is that the new law will reduce organized crime in the country.

At first I thought that's a crazy idea.
But why not?
Tobacco and alcohol are legal drugs.
Try abolish alcohol and see what's happen:)

.....Try abolish alcohol and see what's happen:)

It's already been tried, and "The War On Alcohol" was as effective as "The War On Drugs". Probably even less so. :P

About the same time as the US a non-binding referendum on prohibition of alcohol was held in Sweden on 27 August 1922.

.....As part of the scheme, first-time offenders committing minor crimes would face a new statutory community resolution. This could see them offering a verbal or written apology to their victim, paying compensation or fixing damage.

As cannabis use is a victimless "crime", who is the person busted with pot supposed to apologise or make restitution to ??

Scandinavian Lutherans played a large part in supporting Prohibition in the United States.

Well, election day has passed and an odd thing happened in Florida. The voters picked a controversial republican governor, republican congressmen and approved a state constitutional amendment supporting the legalization of cannabis for medical applications. The amendment had no details concerning implementation of the measure so it still remains up to the legislature to determine the rules.

But Alaska, Oregon and D.C. voted yes for recreational use.

This possibly needs cross-referencing with another thread I'm not sure.

Will Zambia become the first African nation to legalise Marijuana?

“Historically, we’ve been the kind of people that have consumed a lot of marijuana,” said Sinkamba.

(He's from my home town :))

An amazing country really - hardly ever gets noticed :) Just celebrated their 50th birthday; mourned the loss of their President; and had their first riot, all within days of each other. I wish them well :) I don't mean the rioters specifically :) but it seems they had a point... and the government actually listened! *fall over in shock*

Now... do I post this in the climate change thread too *floor-based anxiety attack* or would that be "promoting" the stuff...?

Perhaps I should just lie here till I nod off...
