After attending a COMSOL Multiphysics workshop, I was given an evaluation period to use the software. I would like to model an electromagnetic (EM) wave passing through the interstellar medium (ISM). An EM wave passing through the ISM plasma is “dispersed” in time and frequency. The model can be configured to study dispersion as a function of frequency, dispersion measure (DM), or other desired variable of interest.

The model is relevant to SETI’s Astropulse application. Conceptually, Astropulse deconvolves a dispersed EM pulse to recover the source waveform. The model would also clearly be relevant to other astrophysical work.

This study will be kept as simple as possible, yet observe dispersion. COMSOL has Maxwell’s equations already built in. So setting up an EM plane wave propagation in space is ready now. It seems the key is modeling the EM wave interaction with a low density hydrogen plasma. If someone is interested in helping me with this, I can also work with COMSOL support to make this simulation happen.

COMSOL has a built in Report Generator and this will be the output of the project.
