Well maybe for $50 the regulator might be a good idea especially on the new machine. I didn't know the UPS kicked in for anything but an actual outage.

Many UPSs can make up for over and under voltages without switching to the battery. They will have various input or output taps on their internal transformers. Then switch to account for the change. During the summer the voltage in the building at my work will often drop below 108 VAC during the day. So the UPSs are running in boost mode without using the battery most of the time.

For my UPSs at home I replace the batteries only if the UPS is < 10 years old. Otherwise I replace the whole unit. Given they are normally $100-$150 I figure $15 a year to protect my equipment isn't to bad. Given the cost of the computer equipment.

My mind is going. I can feel it. There is no question about it.

If a power blackout happens and you have no ups. It is like pulling the power cord from the wall. No at all good on your number crunchers. Then you have to wait for whatever power systems come the the rescue. I know from experience how the power grids flicker and pulse during power problems. You may get a few minutes use from your old ups'. That could be a few minutes saved if you are around for the event to do a safe shut down of the computer.

With many (most?) newer UPS's you don't need to be present. My Cyberpower is connected by usb cable to the pc and the UPS software will shut down the pc when it is necessary.

You can 'test' the shutdown operation by pulling the UPS' plug from the wall long enough for the run time to reach it's limit..
