Last news I had, he was living in Sri Lanka, and now after that furious tsunami in that area, I would ask, does anybody know if he is ok?

I knew that name from somewhere. Looks like the tsunami was gentle to him.
Thanks for the refresher, Timmy - I'll forgive your Dogcow™ avatar.

Like wise the name ate at me till I did a google search.
I've enjoyed reading many of his books.
>Early reports indicate that we have lost most of our diving equipment and boats. >Not all our staff members are accounted for – yet.

My heart goes out to you and hope u find them.
It is the next paragraph that says a lot of his charactor:

>We are all trying to contribute to the relief efforts. We shall keep you informed >as we learn more about what happened.

Many are trying to leave the island and it would seem that he is staying to help.
Can anyone confirm this?
I for one will bookmark the site and be back to here what he has to say 1st hand. As I have seen quotes from what he said reported in the news(w/o credit to Author!)

For those who didn't visit the website:

Arthur C. Clarke, notable scientist and writer. Authored many "hard science fiction" books such as Rendezvous with Rama, Cradle, Childhood's End, The Hammer of God, The Deep Range, 2001: A Space Oddyssey, etc. When one thinks of science fiction greats, his is one of three names, along with Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein.

He is also credited with inventing the concept of the geostationary telecommunications satellite in 1945.

Personally, he's a bit of a hero of mine.

"Thank you for your concern about my safety in the
wake of Sunday's devastating tidal wave.

I am enormously relieved that my family and
household have escaped the ravages of the sea that
suddenly invaded most parts of coastal Sri Lanka,
leaving a trail of destruction.

But many others were not so fortunate. For
hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans and an unknown
number of foreign tourists, the day after Christmas
turned out to be a living nightmare reminiscent of The
Day After Tomorrow.

Among those affected are my staff based at our
diving station in Hikkaduwa and holiday bungalow in
Kahawa - both beachfront properties located in areas
worst hit. We still don't know the fully extent of
damage as both roads and phones have been damaged.
Early reports indicate that we have lost most of our
diving equipment and boats. Not all our staff members
are accounted for - yet.

This is indeed a disaster of unprecedented
magnitude for Sri Lanka which lacks the resources and
capacity to cope with the aftermath. We are all trying
to contribute to the relief efforts. We shall keep you
informed as we learn more about what happened.

Curiously enough, in my first book on Sri Lanka, I
had written about another tidal wave reaching the
Galle harbour (see Chapter 8 in The Reefs of
Taprobane, 1957). That happened in August 1883,
following the eruption of Krakatoa in roughly the same
part of the Indian Ocean.
