Okay - so my other half discharged himself from hospital today (where he's been waiting for an operation for what seems forever) to buy a secondhand (manual-less) PS3 blah blah (as per title thread) to replace my son's much-loved 6 year old PS3 console which *sob* did the yellow flash of doom thingy and took all his game data with it.

The new one worked fine in the shop using the red/yellow/white AV(?) cable (as opposed to a HDMI one) so I didn't envisage a problem - but then the shop WAS in modern day Tottenham Court Road and the console had clearly been plugged into something Noah did not take along with him in the ark.

The big turn-on has turned into a big nothing - and an online search for a manual has unearthed this rather sobering item under Product Requirements:

* HDCP-capable display with HDMI cable required for full HD
* Monitor that can support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p for HD

Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to get the two machines talking to one another - perhaps to convert the signal from HDCP for use on a CRT TV?

I don't know if the store will refund the money - it is buyer beware after all - and buying a replacement TV seems ludicrous to me when we barely watch anything on it and it works perfectly well until made to collaborate with something sleek and modern. Oh... and my cats are very fond of its dimensions too... I dread to think what would happen seeing them attempting to pile onto the top of a flatscreen TV :/

Did try one of those "Ask the expert sites" - apparently there were about 2000 at my beck and call - but before I could post my question I had to answer someone else's - and I realised I didn't know where Beyonce got her lipstick from... :/

Which made me wonder if their experts are as clueless as I am...

Ooh... thanks Betreger :) I will arm myself with those specs when I call the store in the morning and see how far I get. Will help me sound more knowledgeable than I am and prevent the word "thingy" coming out of my mouth too often :)

Just make sure that you get 1 that travels in the right direction Annie as they make them to only go in 1 direction or the other. ;-)

If they require extra power than you'll usually have the 1 that you require, but not always.

[edit] BTW there are plenty on ebay too.

Cheers.

Thanks Wiggo :) That should save me starting another thread appealing for help to fix my fix :)

All you need is something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Meter-AUDIO-VIDEO-CABLE-PLAYSTATION/dp/B009AZOP9S/

(That's if there's a weird slot on the back of your superslim that says smthg like "AV Multi out")

Don't worry about the 480p/480i yada-yada.... you where probably looking at US specs. It does do 576i which is what your UK CRT supports.

Hi Alex :)

Thanks :) There IS a weird slot and that cable is what we've been using in it :(

But don't despair... it seems you AND betreger are right :)

Found out something VERY interesting - which I will pop here - just in case somewhere out there in seti land there is some other PS3 gamer with one foot firmly in the Mesozoic->Palaeolithic era.

Before popping out, or in (to ebay/amazon etc) for a converter which you may still need to resort to if the following doesn't work... connect everything up and turn everything on... then try jabbing your finger on the "on" button of your playstation super slim machine and holding it there whilst glaring at your TV screen. It took about eight to ten seconds till I was rewarded with one particular beep which resulted in the startup logo appearing on the TV where before had been just one expanse of black :) If THAT bit of info appeared in the online manual I downloaded, I haven't found it yet...

Tip source - my nine year old nephew who found it out by accident during a fit of console rage after having to vacate the large flatscreen to play on the small CRT spare.

I quote: "The glaring part is ESSENTIAL aunty Annie!"

:)))) Thank you everyone for taking the time to advise and not asking about Beyonce's lipstick in return.

I love being part of SETI! Best online community ever I think!! :)

Ah yes. The "hard reset" trick :)

Had forgotten about that one, but now that you mention it I remember having to press the power button for 5-6 seconds straight, from time to time on my PS2. For the life of me can't remember why though!

Moral of the story: always ask a youngster first!! :)

Glad you guys are sorted:)

Or just ask for non-childproof caps.

Blade! That was INSPIRED! :) Thank you! *off monitor aside* Okay you lot... you can go home now... and take all those sticky little finger prints with you...

Pac Man is the extent of my knowledge

I didn't even have that once upon a playstation turned up in the house. My extent of using a machine to have a game on was an MS-DOS golf game where my ball only ever went 6 feet into the ground which got REALLY boring REALLY fast. Oh... and an Amstrad game called balloon buster... which I got very addicted to... least said about that the better...
