It's hard to do anything when one is 6'1" tall, has had OsteoArthritis since sometime between when I was 18 and 40 yrs old(I fell on My shoulder in the US Army, heat exhaustion, I grew up in Los Angeles County CA, fell at Ft Jackson SC, two different climates, to get OA in the shoulder involves a fall and a dislocation is how one gets OA there from what I've read), suffered from a stiff back since about 20-22 and weigh about 414 or so currently, plus I have damage to both hips, right shoulder(3 dislocations) and the left ankle(surgery to fix a broken left leg in 2002), it can be very discouraging, not to mention very painful, too much unsupported standing or walking is to be avoided, these days I use an ecv at Staters when I go shopping, ecv stands for electronic conveyance vehicle. I'm glad that everyone else can lose weight.

Vic, I'm the first one to admit that I SHOULD be exercising; but, I haven't been for many months. Since October 18, 2015; all I've been doing is following the Atkins Plan on food. I've eliminated all bread, cereal, rice, and sugar - BAD carbs from my diet.

I eat fats, proteins, and veggies. (LOTS of non-starchy veggies.) No calories to count, per se; but for men there is a calorie range of 1800 to 2200 per day. However; if you are sedentary, (like me), you can eat less. Since I'm 5'4.5" tall, I actually choose to follow the women's calorie range of 1400 to 1800 per day; and usually hit at the low end of 1400.

Atkins MORE focuses on Net Carbs per day. If you start on the Atkins 20 Plan; you take in as close to 20 NC per day. (18 to 22 is normal range.)

For you; since you're much taller than I, you'd eat 6-8 Oz, (weighed raw), of protein per meal. To that, you add 2 TBSP of fats; cooking oil, (preferably Olive Oil), or butter, (YES, you can have butter), per meal. Then take in 5 NC of veggies per meal.

This is a REALLY simple plan, that if you and your doctor agree, can help you lose A LOT of weight over a long period of time. It's taken six months for me to lose 40 lbs. I have 112 lbs. to go; this will take at least another year to get to my goal.

A typical breakfast is 3-4 eggs, (any style), 2 strips of bacon, and some veggies of choice - raw or cooked.

Lunch can be an assortment of salami, and other lunch meat, (I eat sliced roast beef, or roasted turkey), and a small salad with onions, tomatoes, and whatever else I choose to throw in...

Water intake is EXTREMELY important. I take in 120 Oz per day; 64 Oz is recommended, more is better.

You can have Crystal Light in your water, or MIO flavorings. If you have a sweet tooth, like me, you can have Atkins bars, shakes, peanut butter cups, etc... I stock up on these when I have the money available. Right now, at this moment, I'm completely out of these; but, in a couple weeks I'll have some stocked up again.

Artificial sweeteners, (for coffee, tea, or water), are limited to three servings a day. If using the powdered forms, count each serving as 1 NC. If you use Liquid Stevia, then there are 0 NC.

Safeway, (for me), has stock on the Atkins snacks. Walmart has stock on the frozen meals. If these are NOT near you, you can order from Atkins on line for most of the snacks; but, NOT the frozen meals. The frozen meals are a little pricey and ARE NOT required; but, are used as an aid if you cannot make time to cook a particular meal.

If you're interested, I'd be willing to be your Atkins buddy and we can support each other in getting healthier in our lives.

Over the last 14 years I have often despaired about my weight.
Some of my toughest moments in life have been the udder futility
of dieting. I have weighed over 285 pounds, on my frame that was
a ticket to all manner of health problems. The sure knowledge of
impending illness due solely to my many layers ugly fat, and the
useless per suite of weight loss was maddening to me. The journey
has been an unending process of learning, and experimentation. I
am still too heavy, and my quest for a svelte continence will go
on. In the end I will be able to say regardless of any outcome:
"I tried." Who knows, it may all work out for me.

edit:
I will never give up on me....

SSI doesn't give out much, food stamps I don't get, so SSI is all I get, asap I'll be eating some rice and chicken, I just lack a cutting board, the rice and chicken was free, both came from a food pantry.

Carrots, cauliflower and broccoli are about as non-starchy as possible, usually when I do eat dinner I have about 1/3rd of a pound of that, with pepper only, no margarine or butter, plus some fishsticks for dinner.

I microwave the veggies, no oil is used, as it's not needed for steaming.

Breakfast here is about 4 eggs and 2 sausage, though sometimes I do have pancakes w/margarine and some cheap maple syrup.

I've got to switch from turkey bologna to something else for some of My sandwiches. Some are pb&j, sorry I do like sandwiches, I do have a weakness for ice cream, though lately I did cut back on that.

I drink crystal light fruit punch, a lot.

I've almost stopped drinking coffee.

Eventually I will be having some spaghetti, but then I do have all the ingredients for that.

I go to Stater Bros for most items, some things I get from Vons and a few items, very few, I get off the net, like powdered eggs $35.99 for 2.25lbs.

I barely manage on $889.40 a month, most people who get SSI don't get anything else in CA, if one gets SS or SSDI, one can get food stamps, I can't by CA state law and no one wants to change that at all, yeah I've asked. I've got a 16yr old car to buy parts for and to have installed, about the only car part I could install is a sun visor, in April I intend to buy a used one, to replace one that is worn out. Asap I'm going to buy some shocks/struts and get the dusty brakes worked on($247+100), plus a used black drivers seat($175 or so), which I won't be able to use until I get the money together to get the seat recovered in tan from the old seat($???). How can I live on My own? I own a mobile home, with no mortgage, but I do pay property taxes($102.65 is due in April) on it and the rent on the land is low, the rent is $215 a month. But enough of that.

Scott, congratulations on your weight loss!!! That is so awesome!!!

I'm glad that everyone else can lose weight.

Vic, I've got great news for you!!! A 400 pound sedentary man has to take in 3618 - 3818 calories per day, just to maintain that body weight. This means that there are accidental errors in your calorie calculations. Your average calorie consumption has to be over 3600 per day in order to be, and stay, in the 400 pound range.

Take in a couple hundred calories less per day and you will lose weight, slowly and sensibly.

The good news is that you do not have to exercise to lose weight.

I think someone diagnosed Me with asthma and issued Me an inhaler, though only under stress have I ever really been out of breath.

Must resist the ice cream...

I am 5 foot 9...and have weighed about 150 lbs. for most of my life.
Skinny as a rail.

If you have lost 40 lbs, that is doing very very well towards you ambition.
Going from 250 or so to 140 is no small task, and you should be commended for having done so well so far.

40lbs, congrats TL, I wish I could do that, cause of My car tires and insufficient income level, I can't go shopping for food until the 4th or 5th of April, I'm ordering 2 tires on the 1st, since I don't trust My compact spare or the right rear tire to drive on 25 miles of interstate highway(freeway), since the tread on both is thin and I have no tire jack(I had to borrow a neighbor and His jack), that is about 12.5 miles each way and that's just to Stater Bros and the Bank.

I've got 14 fishsticks left, 1.5 loaves of bread and enough fixings for spaghetti and 8 or 9 days before I can go shopping for food, plus I don't know how long the spaghetti will last Me.

Thanks everyone. :-) I just keep taking one day at a time. That's all any of us can really do. :-)

Hang in there Vic, it's just got to get better for both of us. I still haven't heard back from the Endodontist on the breakdown of what the insurance will pay, and what I'm supposed to save up for for the root canal. THEN, there's the added expense of a second crown for tooth 14 following the root canal, as quoted by my primary dentist... :-(
