I know the argument for only weighing once a week, but if you don't stay on a low salt diet, there is another option. The option is to weigh yourself every day and your weight for the week is the lowest weight you recorded for the week. This allows you avoid diet restriction before your weigh in but still know what your low weigh is.

Somebody please assure me that it is IMPOSSIBLE to gain nearly three real pounds in a week in which one was a relatively good raccoon!!!

When you weigh in, three things can work against you.

1. If you over eat, you need to eat around 3500 calories per pound of weight you gain, For a normal person, this amount to almost doubling your intake for an entire week.

Wow, one wonders though just how easy it is to over eat by that much a week. I guess a couple of trips to McDonalds would do it.

2. If you are losing weight, high salt intake will cause water to temporary replace the fat you have lost with water. Water weights about 8.3 pounds per gallon so about 1/3 gallon of water could account for 3 pounds of weigh. My diet is pretty free of salty foods so when I indulge in salt, I find in about day my body decides to get rid of the salt and water resulting more visits to the bathroom.

A do notice it if I over eat salty foods, and also if I eat too late at night I find it doesn't digest properly.

3. Spring balance scales can be off several pounds depending on how you step on them and how they sit on the floor. I think they are almost useless for dieting and the 30 dollars or so that you spend on them is a waste of money. After fighting with them for years, I purchased a medical grade beam balance but any medical grade scale is a good investment. One warning about battery power scales. Like fire alarms, you should replace the batteries before they are low in order to ensure an accurate reading.

I've given up using my spring scales for just that reason. I found that because our bathroom floor is uneven I could get "better" numbers by moving them to a different spot for weighing. I now use the scales at the gym. This week I gained 0.2 of a lb. I can probably ignore this safely as long as its not a general trend.

I did feel depressed because the workout I do is pretty strenuous and if I'd done it when I was young the lbs would have fallen off and I'd be super fit. However as you get older it really is genuinely harder to shift the pounds. I shall have to settle for being super fit and cuddly.

Lost 5 kilos over the last two weeks. Stress is the best diet I say! I've been eating almost nothing lately... Pj took me out for kebab yesterday evening. Was good to have a decent meal in the stomach for once:)

From the picture in your profile, it doesn't look like you need to lose that much. In any case, a trick I learned with my roommate is when your stomach won't take solid food, liquid will still go down. In her case I needed to pour the calories in her so I used milk shakes and carnation instant breakfast but if you want to lose weigh at a controlled rate, I would suggest soup and if it's chunky, then a blender is useful. I even tried running chili through a blender but that didn't work because of the tomatoes and chili powder were to hard on her mouth.

Julie doesn't need to loose any weight. She was just fine, last we met.
Depression and stress go hand in hand.
I hit bottom in late 1994 early 1995. I forced myself to eat. Booth and Yoghurt.
I did this not because I was hungry, but because of my Children.
I may not be a Beanpole today, but I prefer that to being a sceleton(?).

Someone younger helped me out of that funk. Temporarily at least.

This should also be in James' thread, but it is also relavent here.

Some of us want to loose weight, because of health issues, some because of support, some don't need to loose any weight, because I like you just the way you are.

Pudgy Little Raccoon Weigh-In: 168.0 lbs

The three pounds from last week must have, in fact, been water. (Whew!!!)

In light of last week's discussion about scales, I tried moving my scale around on our hall bathroom floor. My weight was the same in 4 random spots, so shockingly our bathroom floor must be level. This actually surprised me because we live in a cheaply built, post WWII / 50's-era track house, on a very steep hill in the middle of earthquake country. Nothing in our house is typically level!!! I saw Eric hang a towel rack once. It was perfectly level on his leveling tool, but he had failed to account for the fact that our house was not level. It was hilarious!!! He kept insisting that it was level, but it looked so wonky!!! Now we hire out for most home improvement tasks, in the interest of preserving marital harmony. Anyway, last year we did have new tile put into our hall bathroom and maybe the tile installers somehow made our bathroom floor level before they put the tile down. That is the only explanation I can think of for why it appears that our hall bathroom floor is level, when absolutely nothing else in the house is.

Anyway... nothing really lost, nothing really gained - I am a study in pudgy little raccoon stability, plus or minus a few pounds either way depending on my salt indulgence.

Honestly, I think my only realistic weight goal is to just not gain any extra cookie-pudge through the winter holidays. This is my favorite season for baking and I have more time this year to bake than I have had in previous years. I have no plans to scale back my baking, but I will try to scale back my eating.

I've hung a towel bar, it doesn't look wonky, it's fairly level with respect to the ceiling, that's good enough.

I'm still at 378lbs, winter temps or not, 39F/3C this morning, I cough a lot when I'm cold. So since I'm without gas heat and I have to wait for that to be fixed, I wait, so I hooked up the supplied portable electric heater, there goes My bill, $15 extra next month, $30 in Jan and in Jan I have to pay an extra $15 for trash from then on as everyones rent here went up by $15 a month. But that's life in a livable fixer...

At least I'm not Inuyasha, His gf Kagome can tell Him to sit and His body is compelled to do just that, sometimes Kagome says 'sit' a lot and that looks painful, He's supposedly half human and half wolf-demon, it's anime that's in english...

How much salt did you have last night. That has to be water weight.

Would those bottles have a Moose on the label?
Remembering a port-call at HMCS Shearwater(?) at Halifax in 1981.....

Monday evening weigh-in: 233 after a light dinner.
Down 7 lbs since I went back to work on 14 October.

It's a reference to a failed heavy water plant that was to be built up in Cape Breton. That part of the province of Nova Scotia in the 1960s was very much separated from the rest of the country because of a very old and traditional culture there. With the announcement of a federal government's new vote getting construction project, a new heavy water extraction plant to assist in Canada's world wide push to sell heavy water 'Candu' nuclear power generators: The local citizens were excited, if not mystified as to just what was heavy water. (We won't mention the wonderful job Canada did in assisting poor third world countries with their atomic weapons programs.) Well to make a long story a bit shorter, native comedians in Cape Breton right away began making jokes about the many uses of the new substance. So naturally, and with out a coordinated plan, they all made references to the sort of, and size of the containers that heavy water would be sold in. Most of the jokes made reference to using the stuff to help out 'Skinny people.' Just as an aside, they ended up building the plant twice. The first time it went up it was built wrong and did not work. The second time it went up just in time for a terrible down turn in the world's market for Canada's uranium enrichment machines.
(I know, you had to be there.)

Kudos Ang. Mother Nature did not intend for us to loose weight in the Autumn/Winter.
I have been happily giving in to my Soulfood gravings.

Having friends helps, but yeah winters coming, this morning was colder than the night before. So far I'm managing to be stable at least...

As long as it's healthy stuff, I think it's a fair idea. Now I wonder what is good brain fuel?
