I heard nothing good about Weight Watchers myself here.

Same here.
The best diet i`m aware of is exercise.

Message 1587381 - Posted: 15 Oct 2014, 20:39:49 UTC

I am a serial dieter, but I do it rather atypically across long periods of time.

For example, when I was in my mid 20's I was a little pudgy and I put myself on a "gentle diet". It took me about 10 months to lose about 15 pounds. I did not keep the weight off forever. It crept back on slowly, at a rate of about 3 pounds per year, and I put on some weight on top of that until I decided to diet again..

So then, when I was about 40 years old, I found myself to be about as heavy as I am right now. I did the Weight Watchers on-line program for about 9 months, with a few modifications of my own to make it a more "gentle diet". I lost 30 pounds, but I eventually lapsed back into my old love of delicious high fat foods. The weight I had lost crept back on, again at a rate of about 3 pounds a year.

Clearly now that I am 51 years old, it is the time for me to get serious again, and eventually I suppose I will manage to lose some weight. Sigh.... Dieting is so "un-fun", even if you try to do it gently.

I have heard that yo-yo dieting is bad for you - 10 pounds off, 10 pounds on, back and forth year after year. I don't know if serial dieting every 10 to 15 years is quite as bad. The way I figure it, if I had never lost the 15 pounds in my 20's and the 30 pounds in my 40's, I would probably would still have gained about 3 pounds a year, and I would probably be nearing 200 pounds right now if I hadn't gone on those two diets.

To answer the Weight Watchers question, I found their on-line program to be a relatively sensible one. They want you to eat real food, just less of it and lower in fat content. I did Weight Watchers before they went to their current "points" program, so I don't know how it has changed. I found that if I stuck to the plan strictly, I was hungry to the point of grouchiness and headaches all the time, so I modified the plan for me. I found that I needed to eat a couple hundred more calories per day than the plan allowed me, but it was still under what I needed to maintain my weight. I lost weight, but slower than the plan predicted I would lose weight.

I would recommend Weight Watchers, but if you go on it and you find that you need more food to keep from getting headaches, then eat more food. There is no way I would have stuck to ANY diet long term that made me cranky and head-achy.

My wife tried hundreds of diets.
Not one did work for her.
She loves to eat and like you mentioned if she doesn`t eat enough she suffers from head aches.

I've heard of other people getting headaches from too little food. I don't think it's happened to me, but I do get them from too much sugar.

I could probably do some exercise once I've lost some weight. I do get some, but it has to be interesting or I can't stick to it. The stuff I do at the museum is good exercise. Just walking around the block is boring; treadmills and exercise bikes are mind-numbing.

I just get acid indigestion from too much sugar, so I keep a supply of Vons ant acids, 200 tablet size on hand.

Exercise is where you find it. The total number of steps you take over a day all count. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Park way out in the parking lot and walk the extra distance to a store or to the office. The more reasons you can find to be on your feet the better and they all count as exercise. Many of us (me included) sometimes spend far to much time on our back side and not enough just moving around.

I know all that. However, the exercise I'm getting is interfering with getting it any other time. I have to get down on my knee to check the compressor (and now twice more to close and open the drain valves), plus climbing on and off the car strains it. It still hurts tonight. Also, my safety shoes hurt my feet so much they keep hurting all week now, even wearing my regular shoes or no shoes at all. I asked the doctor about this. She said to get callous pads and a pumice stone, and if those don't help, see a podiatrist.

My next weigh in will be on the 23rd. I like Eric's approch. Just cut one thing in your daily routine.
Try that before any surgary or other diet plan David.

David,

I have a friend who had the radical stomach surgery. It worked for him for a short time; however, due to stress and depression, he gave up on the diet that accompanied the surgery and gained the weight back.

Instead of the radical surgery; I would recommend the lap band surgery. Once you reach your weight goal and are sure that you can maintain it; the lap band surgery is reversible.

Exercise is also an important step. I have had to cease the exercise I was doing for awhile; but, I will be returning to it soon.

Good luck in your endeavors. :-)

For years my brother's narrow feet were so much of a problem that he had to go to a custom boot maker and have cowboy boots made to solve his feet problems. Yes they were costly but they were worth it. You might see if there is a custom shoe maker around or if that fails, you might be able to get a shoe one size larger and put padding in to control the uncomfortable pressure points on your feet. My dads biggest complaint about safety shoes were the rubber soles. He was more comfortable if they had leather soles. Most likely because the leather had a bit more give to it.

One of the things I have learned about safety shoes is that as they "break in", the safety cap does not allow the shoe to fully reshape itself to fit your foot. What I have had to do is get a wider shoe than I would normally wear, to leave more room in the toe box. It also doesn't help that I have two different size feet. My right is an 8-1/2 D-width, my left is a 9. So I get size 9 E-width safety shoes, and wear a size 8-9 sock on the left and a size 10-12 sock on the right. Sounds wierd, but it works for me. When I'm working, I spend 8-9 hours per day standing and walking on tile-covered concrete floors or diamond-tread steel plates.

Another ooption I have seen recently is athletic-style safety shoes, but I wouldn't wear them in the industrial environment I work in.

I suppose I'll buy them a size bigger next time, but I don't wear them that much so they will probably last a while.

Athletic-style would not be a good idea. They recommend having a defined heel that can catch on things when climbing onto train cars and whatnot. If I step on a stirrup-type step on a freight car, for example, and my foot slips, the heel should catch on it so my whole leg doesn't go through and dump me on the ground where the train will likely run over me. (Not that I plan to do much switching of freight cars, but the principle applies to lots of things.)
