Those links you have ...

Mind that I didn't check if those (exact model) coolers will be compatible to your CPU/socket/motherboard

I think it is saying the ram-sticks are 5 inches high.
Sure go ahead check.

No way
(5) inch = (12.7) centimeter

This have to be the length
http://www.simmtester.com/page/news/showpubnews.asp?num=168

Sure go ahead check.

Seems I used confusing English
By "Mind" I mean "Pay attention to", "Note that"/"Take note"

(I expect you to check and then ask people here is it OK (I do not have i7 CPU))

The two other dimensions are larger than 5". Go ahead and click on my link and you will see.

Mind that you check that those (exact model) coolers will be compatible to your CPU/socket/motherboard

I hope you do not mind my corrections.

"Mind that I didn't check ..."
I hope you do not mind my emphasis ;)

I'm not sure this is correct use of 'Mind' but some Dictionary/Thesaurus used by Google say it may mean "pay attention to"

The size dimensions of 7.1 x 6.5 x 5 inches is most likely the shipping box they will use.
A standard desktop DIMM is 133.35 x 30.0 x 4.0 mm or 5.25 x 1.18 x 0.15 inches if you prefer. Standard notation is L x H x W. I would say you should check the manufacture site for exact specs, but Corsair is horrible about doing such things. Well they give you the weight on their site... <sarcasm> because that is a rather critical things to know.</sarcasm>

Hal,
ROFLOL <a new term I learned today in the Café>.

That mfg. site again. I keep getting sucked into the amazon ad thing. I'll check that or wait till I get it but I did think that 5" was a bit crazy. That's a relief. I was afraid I couldn't find any heatsink/fan that tall.

Yes, the official 'Tech Specs' do not list dimensions:
http://www.corsair.com/en/vengeance-16gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz16gx3m2a1600c10

***

This is big front picture:
http://media.bestofmicro.com/Z/O/348612/original/Corsair-Vengance-16GB-top.jpg

I saved it, opened in IrfanView and Selected the top photo (in rectangle):
Corsair-Vengance-16GB-top.jpg - IrfanView (Selection: 33, 4; 1535 x 611; 2.512)

2.512 is L/H

H = L/2.512

H = 133.35/2.512 = 53.1 mm

1 inch = 25.4 mm
53.1 / 25.4 = 2.09 inch

Great, thanks

And then I have to subtract the amount that goes into the MB to figure the clearance I need for the heatsink.

Did you consider liquid cooling? an H80i or an H100i? their heatsink is a bit larger than the CPU itself. I am not sure about the 4790K, but the 4770K can't be 100% used with seti without overheating. If your case is up to it, I would say go for it. There's another thread about the 4770K in the forum somewhere, search for it and check the discussions that took place.

Thanks for that tip. I know the case I bought has some kind of "holes" in the back for liquid cooling. This might be the time when I need to look into it. I do assume that liquid cooling is much better than air. How about the safety as far as leaks? Eek!

Hal Wow,
That cooler is huge. It looks like you have to remove the fan/heatsink to add memory unless you already have it filled to capacity.

My case also shows max cooler height of 7.3" and max gpu card length of 12.7".
I thought that was a nice feature of their documentation.

And sometimes the emotions get involved there a bit too.

I just got my new motherboard from UPS. It's an ASRock Z87. I have one concern; the cpu is very close to the 4 memory slots which are thicker (the memory sticks that is) than the old ones in that they have, I guess, a built in heatsink. So now I have to be careful that my cpu heatsink/fan is "slim" enough. I need to measure everything out and do some research. The MB is a little larger than a standard 12x9.6" board.

Depending on how tall the memory you have it could be an issue. The CPU memory layout is pretty standard & looks like it is exactly the same as my MB. Even using a massive Noctura D-14 cooler I was fine for clearance with the memory.

I was worried about the height of the cooler, but the specs for the case include the max cooler height allowed & it was within 5mm. So was fine.

Just build from scratch and start with the basics. I think all that is a bit above my pay grade at least for now. If I start with any questions I won't be done 'till Christmas. Why bother with a case it only limits you. :-)

Well...

A case does have the advantages of:

  • Ducting the airflow to keep things cooler;
  • Keeping the worst of the dust and cats out of the workings;
  • And shielding the computer generated broadband electronic noise from obliterating all radio reception for your neighborhood...

Such skeletal systems are best left imprisoned in a Faraday cage or hidden down in your cool basement ;-)

Happy fast cool clean quiet crunchin'!
Martin
