Instead of an answer, I will supply a question, What is the difference between working in ice and working in stone? The ice is temporary and the stone is permanent but does that make one art and one not? Good question! :) Because I cannot sculpt ice (I'd LOVE to give it a gom although the chainsaw element does perturb me a little... :)) I would say an ice-carving IS art. Of a transitory form of course :) If that looks like I've just contradicted myself - move along please people!! There's nothing to see here! :) A stone carving will also be art - albeit much less transitory - depending on whether it appeals to the viewer I suppose :) I would be more than happy to see this thread moved over to the politics forum. This has already been suggested to me as a sensible way forward, given the current ambience, and I agree. :))))))) @Janne - that art is irresistable... I must have it! *nyom* :) edit: are we in politics now? I blinked and missed the move... another edit: *astonished blink* We ARE!! Hello everyone :) again... :) |

Sorry moving a 340 ton rock from 1 place to another at a huge cost !. +100 A rock in it's natural setting can be a landmark. A rock that has been sculpted into the shape of something else may be artwork. A rock that has been used to form part of a structure is a building material. A rock that has been sculpted in place to commemorate an event is a monument. A rock that has been moved half way across a country and put on display is still just a rock. Now where is my pet rock? Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Instead of an answer, I will supply a question, What is the difference between working in ice and working in stone? The ice is temporary and the stone is permanent but does that make one art and one not? As I told you before, your special talent is in the area of art, something I am not very good at. The fact that you work in cake frosting means there is little difference between you and somebody who works in ice. As for ice carving, you don't have to use a chain saw, other tools are used as well, It's just that a chain saw is faster and more impressive. The big problem is making and holding the block of ice. Most people who are into ice carving have a walk in freezer - something not commonly found around the house. |

Art or Rock? It can bring tears to people, so it has emotion, but it is just names on sliced rock. |

jeez. I see no resaon to have moved an honest if not spirited dialog on what is art to the cesspit of politics. Well as everyone has there own definition of art and what constitutes art. I for one wont begrudge any person the right to say that what they call art is my junk and or vice a versa. My opinion is that anything that man makes in whatever media can be called art, If even one person likes it. [/quote] Old James |

jeez. I see no resaon to have moved an honest if not spirited dialog on what is art to the cesspit of politics. Me neither. Art is very much politics but it its more. We enjoy art everyday and it shouldn't be left to politicians (or moderators) to decide whats bad or good. Big horror... |

jeez. I see no resaon to have moved an honest if not spirited dialog on what is art to the cesspit of politics. I must say it was most disconcerting :) I entered my edit window in the cafe and when I exited it... I was in here... TARDIS or magic? Who knows! :) |
